“And there came a leper to Him, beseeching Him, and kneeling down to Him, and saying unto Him, ‘If thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean.’ And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth His hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, ‘I will; be thou clean.’ And as soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.” – Mark 1:40-42

LEPROSY (or Hansen’s disease) is a chronic malady that we often associate with Bible stories, but it still afflicts thousands living today. Leprosy causes progressive and permanent damage to nerves, skin, eyes and limbs. Untreated, it can lead to blindness, ulcers, paralysis and amputation. According to the World Health Organization, there were over 208,000 new leprosy cases reported in 2018 by 159 countries; nearly 58% of those cases occurred in INDIA.

Today, treatment with multidrug therapies can effectively cure the condition and stop its spread. But early diagnosis is key to preventing disabilities. The problem with leprosy is it mainly affects the poor who have limited access to medical care. They also fear the stigma that accompanies the disease.
