Farmers urged to ‘dip a toe’ in Open Farm Sunda F

ood and biodiversity will be at the heart of a two- day online event hosted this month by LEAF Open Farm Sunday. Featuring live interactive tours and demonstrations from farmers and chefs from around the UK, the event takes place on the weekend of 19-20 Sep- tember. It follows this summer’s Open Farm Sunday which took place online due to the coronavi- rus pandemic. Organisers are teaming up with British Food Fortnight and Scottish Food and Drink Fort- night, also held in September, in a ambitious back-to-back weekend which brings a new cookery ele- ment to celebrate not only farm- ing but the food it produces. The Linking Environment

And Farming (LEAF) charity is calling on farmers to get involved by sharing their own short film clips, photos and stories of food and farming across social media

– showcasing agriculture to the general public using the hashtag #LOFS20.

The first day of the weekend will focus on food, recipes and cookery. The second day will see farmers virtually open their farm gates to show the public how their food is produced – and how they protect and enhance wildlife and biodiversity on their farms. LEAF Open Farm Sunday manager Annabel Shackleton said: “At the very heart of LEAF Open Farm Sunday is telling the real stories of farming and this is the perfect opportunity for farm- ers across the country to get in- volved and collectively make a huge positive impact.” Farmers could dip their toe in with as little as one photo or a self- made video on their social chan- nels. Ms Shackleton said: “What we want to show is a really rich and diverse kaleidoscope of farm- ing stories from the people who can tell them best.”

The recent pandemic had highlighted the value of food as well as fresh air and countryside. And the internet was a powerful platform to reach more people –

including those unable to attend an open farm event before.
