Arable High germination levels in over-yeared seed H

ybrid barley seed kept in on-farm stores since last autumn because wet

weather prevented it from being drilled can still be planted suc- cessfully. Testing of more than 300 sam- ples of over-yeared hybrid barley seed show it has a high average germination rate of 96%. Near- ly three-quarters of the samples tested were of the popular hy- brids SY Kingsbarn and Bazoo- ka – each of which averaged 97% germination.

A further one-fifth of samples

were made up of the hybrids Bel- mont, Belfry, Libra and SY King- ston, each of which also averaged 97% germination. Three seed samples of the hybrid SY Bara- cooda averaged 94% germination. The lowest average germina- tion level rate was 74% from five samples of a specific batch of old- er hybrid variety Sunningdale. It had been over-yeared for three years, said James Taylor-Alford,

plied maintained such high lev- els of germination after a year in storage,” said Mr Taylor-Alford. “Anyone who didn’t take up this offer of free hybrid barley seed testing when it was available, we would still urge them to have their over-yeared seed tested at their lo- cal laboratory before planting, ac- cording to best practice.” Knowing the germination per-

centage and target plant popu- lation – and taking into account other factors, such as usual plant losses – enables the ideal seed rate to be calculated more accu- rately. This is even more impor- tant when drilling later or in poor conditions.

Syngenta head of seed crop sales for UK and Ireland. “After the very challenging growing season it is nice to share some good news with growers that the high-quality seed sup-

Testing has shown high levels of germination in over-yeared SY Kingsbarn seed.

“Hybrid barley offers numer- ous advantages, not least high yields and grain quality, early ma- turity to help with timely estab- lishment of following crops, and excellent suppression of grass weeds. Accurate seed rates pro- vide the foundation for many of these benefits.”
