Forestry Guaranteed income

for planting trees • £10m available from woodland scheme • Trees to tackle effect of climate change • Guaranteed protection against inflation

F

armers and land managers looking to plant trees are being encouraged to apply

for the Woodland Carbon Guaran- tee scheme by 11 October. The scheme is a Forestry Com- mission administered £50m in- itiative to accelerate woodland planting rates and remove car- bon dioxide from the atmosphere. New tree planting projects are eligible for long-term payments based on the amount of carbon a new woodland will store. After an auction process tak- ing place online from 26 October to 1 November, successful bid- ders will be offered the option to “sell” woodland carbon in the

form of Woodland Carbon Units to the government over 35 years at a guaranteed price protected against inflation.

By putting a financial val-

ue given to each tonne of carbon stored, the government says the scheme reflects its confidence in the continued growth of markets for woodland carbon. Landown- ers will have a revenue stream in future from selling carbon on the domestic market.

Successful auction

The announcement follows a second successful auction which closed in June 2020 and saw 27 contracts offered by the Forestry

Commission to help stimulate the creation of 1,517ha of new wood- land specifically to help combat climate change. Forestry Commission chair-

man William Worsley said: “This pioneering scheme could be the perfect fit for many farmers and land managers looking to help tackle the climate and nature crises now upon us.

“Results from the second auc-

tion show the scheme is growing in its success, providing more land managers with long-term income support for creating new woodland. I strongly encourage anyone thinking about plant- ing to sign up ahead of the next auction in October.” Encouraging diverse woodland types and tree species is a key factor in the Forestry Commis- sion’s efforts to increase tree planting rates in Eng- land. The scheme aims to achieve a varied range of pro- jects across different locations and scales. The scheme has al-

The government plans to increase planting to 30,000ha annually by 2025. Lord Goldsmith (below): the benefits of trees are undeniable.
