James Muir, Chair of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, on how the region can overcome the challenges poised by the Covid-19 pandemic

The SCR’s plan to revive the economy in South Yorkshire

from its economic consequences, unless we take bold, radical action. That is why the Local Enterprise Partnership

C

(LEP) has developed with Mayor Dan Jarvis a Renewal Action Plan. This provides a blueprint for how we provide relief to workers, businesses and places, but also put in place the foundation to revitalise the economy after the disruption caused by Covid-19. The LEP and business leaders in the region are

best placed to deliver this plan. We know the challenges facing South Yorkshire and how we can overcome them. We have to make our economy more

productive and more innovative – not just bigger but better. We have to accelerate our progress in tackling the extreme threat posed by climate

oronavirus has hit us hard. Places like South Yorkshire are suffering badly from the disease and will be slower to recover

change. And we have to reduce inequality and the waste of potential by helping all those who need it to gain skills and employment. This recovery must work for everyone,

especially people that have been left behind. It puts in place support for people to improve their skills and find opportunities; backs small and large firms alike to access the support they need to adapt and thrive; and revitalises our places – by fixing our infrastructure and regenerating our towns. All of this not only protects and creates jobs,

but ensures we rebuild South Yorkshire’s economy into one that is stronger, greener, and fairer. If we can put this vision into practice, we can build back better. The plans we’re setting out are ambitious – but the scale of the crisis, and of our untapped potential, demands nothing less. The recovery from Covid-19 must be part of a much wider change that finally addresses those

underlying issues that have held us back for so long. Our ambitious Renewal Action Plan is for the short term. Beyond this, we need to move to the recovery phase, before ultimately making our economy more resilient. Our Strategic Economic Plan – which we will consult on over the summer – will help put us on a strong footing to build a stronger, prosperous future of the region. We have recently achieved greater powers and

funding in South Yorkshire, with the passage through parliament of a long-awaited devolution deal, but the pandemic has highlighted just how much more we need. Now is the time for us to bring forward this

ambitious, far-reaching and deliverable Renewal Action Plan. We need the Government to match our ambition. This plan is the path to ensuring that the Sheffield City Region, and the North, drive the nation’s coronavirus recovery.
