‘The

Government’s new scheme is

The Government will subsidise work placements for young people ages 16-24

Kickstart Scheme to help young people in challenging times

announcement of the government’s Kickstart Scheme forms part of a wider plan to boost business confidence while protecting livelihoods as we restart, rebuild and renew our economy. The Kickstart Scheme will provide targeted

I

measures to help young people gain access to thousands of work placements, apprenticeships and enter the labour market at this challenging time. Through this scheme, the Government will subsidise work placements for young people aged between 16-24 who are claiming Universal Credit and at risk of long- term unemployment. From 1 August, businesses will be paid £2,000 for each new apprentice they hire under the age of 25, and £1,500 for any new apprentices recruited over the age of 25. This is in addition to the existing £1,000 grant that the government offers to businesses who take on young apprentices between the ages of 16 and 18.

t is absolutely imperative that young people are central to our economic recovery plans and equally important that the

Andy Hibbitt, Chief Operating Officer at

Doncaster Chamber of Commerce, said: “The Government’s new scheme is an

investment in our future workforce. High quality work placements and apprenticeships provide a fantastic vehicle for businesses to develop better skills, a pipeline of young talent, close the skills gap and grow their own workforce. “Many studies show that apprenticeships

contribute to business growth, with apprentices providing a fresh outlook, new skills and a dynamic approach.” The importance of engaging with young

people will come as no surprise to Doncaster businesses who have been working with the Chamber’s education arm, Opportunities Doncaster, for a number of years, to support, engage and inspire the next generation. Andy continued: “Doncaster Chamber, in

partnership with Doncaster Council, and both the business and education community launched Opportunities Doncaster as the vehicle for business engagement with young people in the borough. At the same time we created the

Doncaster Promise, an agreement between business and education to support the borough’s plan: to build a growing, productive and inclusive local economy. Hundreds of Doncaster Chamber members have committed to the Promise, engaging in over 80,000 meaningful encounters between business and young people in 2019 alone, with many firms taking on apprentices and work placements.” Following the announcement of the

Government’s Kickstart Scheme, Doncaster Chamber will continue to build on the work undertaken in 2019 to create hundreds of local opportunities for young people. The Chamber will continue to lobby for

Government to provide further support to businesses, ensuring there is a need and the demand to take on and offer as many high quality apprenticeships and opportunities as possible. Further investment now will accelerate the

Kickstart Scheme, and provide the platform to come out of this with a better skilled workforce for many decades to come.
