Chamber urges the Government to put spades in the ground
Deaf Trust stalwart retires after 42 years
Doncaster Deaf Trust’s longest standing volunteer is stepping down after 42 years of dedicated service, including the last 13 years leading the trustees. Bobbie Roberts (pictured), MBE, Freeman
of Doncaster Town, former Chair of the Doncaster Magistrates bench and recipient of Doncaster Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement award in 2015, stepped down from her role as Chair of Trustees at the end of July. Her tireless work and campaigning for the
rights of Deaf children and young people has seen her briefing government departments, welcoming royal visitors and working across a number of European Countries. Alexis Johnson, Executive Principal of
Doncaster Deaf Trust, said: “I can honestly say I’ve never met a Chair of Trustees like Bobbie. She is in the Trust every day providing her support and she never stops. The time, drive and passion that she has given to Doncaster Deaf Trust over the past 42 years has made a huge difference to so many families and employees. “Bobbie will be hugely missed, not only
by the Trustees, Governors and staff but by the pupils and families who she has interacted with on a daily basis.” Bobbie Roberts said: “It has been a
massive honour to work with Doncaster Deaf Trust and see the organisation change and grow over the past 42 years. “I’ve had the privilege of working with so
many wonderful people. I would like to say a special thank you to Alan Robinson, the previous Executive Principal, and I wish Alexis Johnson, our new Executive Principal all the best for the future. “There are so many things to be proud of
and so many people who’ve had a huge impact on my life but at 82 years old I thought I’d up the pace a little and take some time to travel!”

The Chamber is championing the Gateway East rail scheme
In light of Covid-19 and the inevitable challenges that the economic crisis will create to the Sheffield City Region, Doncaster Chamber has issued a fresh call to Government to honour its commitment to levelling up and to back two critical infrastructure projects in Doncaster. The two headline projects that the Chamber,
‘We have heard lots of warm
words from the Government’
Doncaster’s town centre as well as providing a much-needed upgrade in healthcare facilities for Doncaster’s communities. Locating the hospital on the
Waterfront site in Doncaster’s town centre would cerate significant footfall for local businesses whilst also catalysing
working with its partners, is loudly championing are the Gateway East rail scheme and the construction of a new hospital in Doncaster’s town centre. The Gateway East rail scheme will see the
creation of a spur off the East Coast Mainline to a new railway station servicing Doncaster Sheffield Airport and the surrounding area. The project will create better East to West as well as North to South links, relieve congestion on the East Coast Mainline, and provide a massive boost for route development and inward investment aspirations at the airport. In national infrastructure terms, the project could be delivered for the price of £300m and within just a few years. Making Doncaster the home of one of the
Government’s promised 40 new hospitals could have a catalytic impact on the reinvention of
multiple opportunities for education, innovation and research partnerships that could contribute significantly to the regional economy. Chamber CEO Dan Fell said: “We have heard
lots of warm words from the Government about levelling up and the need to ‘build, build, build’ our way to economic recovery. These sentiments are very welcome and
Doncaster businesses will be encouraged to know that Government wants to grow the country out of an economic hole rather than introduce another round of austerity in order to balance the books. However, we now need Government to match the rhetoric with a clear commitment to delivering these two key projects for our borough in the near future.” The Chamber will continue to work with
partners to lobby for both schemes and is currently optimistic that the Government could give the green light to both projects before the end of this calendar year.
