goin’. And the thing is, no one knows who it will kill, who it will make really sick, who will just feel mild symptoms or not know at all, but be spreading it just the same. We all know that people need to make
money, put food on their table, pay for their housing. Those are critical needs, and no one should be judged for needing to survive. We also want to recreate, get out of our living space, get out of our headspace, see friends and new places and escape our inner demons. Those are not critical needs, per se, unless we start suffering mentally and get to a serious level of crisis. Some people have good intentions and
want to save local businesses by using their services. I totally understand and appreciate helping others. However, that is still non-essen- tial and putting yourself and others at risk. A better way to safely support businesses would be to buy a gift certificate or to give a donation. If you’d normally go out to eat on Friday nights, consider buying a gift certificate each week in- stead. You can use those when it’s safe. Or use their take-out or delivery services, and don’t forget to tip very well. If they go out of business you can at least feel like you tried your best while protecting your health and respecting others.
Some people are financially able to keep
paying for services they normally use, even though they can’t safely use them now. My mom kept paying her hairdresser and the woman who has cleaned her house off and on for almost 40 years, although she didn’t cur- rently use their services. That’s a very generous offering that can make the difference in some- one’s ability to survive. The longer we don’t practice safe habits,
the longer businesses will suffer. Some parts of the country are already shutting down again, because selfish people just couldn’t delay their gratification. There are so many who are throwing
caution to the wind and continuing with their pleasure-seeking pursuits as if nothing were happening. Maybe they think it’s all a “hoax.” I’ve been watching people post pictures of
themselves with others, out in public, at each others’ homes, at the beach, without a mask and close together! Seemingly sensible and in- telligent people don’t appear to care. If you mention it to them they’ll defend themselves and say they are being careful, they know the person, they weren’t sick, and other excuses. I want to scream at them, where is your fucking mask!?
And now it has hit home. A person I’ve
known most of my life, the mother of two of my friends, who was there when I delivered my first child, is in the ICU fighting for her life. She’s been there for four days. Her husband, whom I blame for changing her sensibilities and beliefs into something none of us recog- nize, has just gone to the ER with lung pain and been admitted. They went on a couple of vacations with
a travel club without masks! How many others were exposed?! Why didn’t the company insist on them wearing masks?! Will the company be liable? Will people take personal responsibility for their failure to act responsibly? They bought into the ideas that some
people, claiming to be our leaders, are feeding us. It’s not real. It’s being over-dramatized. It’s political and other bullshit. And now they may die or have permanent damage. That makes me even more angry! How hard would it have been to avoid all that with social distancing, hand washing and a simple, safe mask?! I lost my job, haven’t been going out,
worry about my husband and kids, who are still having to mix with the population, and am sick to death of the anxiety I have been experienc- ing. Maybe that anxiety is what is making peo- ple behave as if they have lost their ever-lovin’ minds. Maybe it’s all just their way of express- ing their fear. But it surely seems as if those who apparently don’t have a clear picture of re- ality turn it into mask wearers vs. non-mask wearers. Once again some of us have fallen for the
tactics of those in charge, who wish to stay in charge and use us as pawns to do so. They have to keep us divided, or we’ll be a huge force that can overturn their corruption and control. We
