Shanty to Blues radio. Mark’s efforts paid off quickly the album got rave reviews across the Blues media spectrum and the song "Killing Fields" topped the Blues Critic Chart at #1 for 5 weeks and stayed Top 10 for 8 months! It was certified #1 Blues Album of the year in 2007 by Real Blues Magazine and "Killing Fields" was Nominated 2007’s "Best Blues Song", then "Big Shanty" was Nominated 2007 “Best New Artist ". In France it was #1 on Paris Midnight Special radio for many weeks.
Take us from the founding of King Mojo to where you are today. In 2003 I kept working the artists that I’d signed to King Mojo and everything was going as planned. Years later in 2012 in order to be closer to my aging parents to help out if needed I bought a nearby condo and while moving became short of breath. My doctor told me I needed a quadruple heart bypass. After the surgery for the next year I just rested and wrote songs. That event put a lot
of things into perspective and I decided to re- tire for the third time, but this time I was de- termined to stay retired.
Do you think radio airplay is still im- portant? I guess it is for Country and Black record companies, but I can’t speculate on numbers because today I’m far from being active in the music business. However… I do know there’s more money in having a song in a hit video game than having a hit song on the radio.
Share your thoughts on the music in- dustry in 2020. I don’t see how anyone can make money in the music business today, or for that matter is there still a music business? Or is it a dead man walking? The only people I see turning a buck are established mega-stars like the Rolling Stones that tour every decade or so and Rap groups who tour and sell merchan- dise. To me it kinda sorta like being in the shoe business… but no soul. •
