Rock & roll HEALTH Chick

I’M STILL STANDING YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!

by Electra I’m also still writing, and you’re still

reading so WOOHOO!Many are not so fortu- nate to do the things we may take for granted. I’m grateful still to be alive. I hope you are, too. Maybe you’re like my friends and me.

Every time we have any little symptom, we look it up to see if we’ve got “IT!” I have had a few instances of not feeling well and being afraid. I’ve been feeling bad for over a week now. I have been careful. I am a medical professional and I err on the side of caution, but there is al- ways a chance of picking it up somewhere. We have had a couple of social distanc-

ing visits with a friend. We stayed outside and stayed apart, but she had been around others and not been careful. Turns out one of those people was around someone who is now in the hospital with it. Our friend is not feeling well and is waiting on test results. That makes me nervous. My husband does the shopping and goes

to work, but he is very careful. My son worked outside with someone who was coughing and tested positive the next day. I have not been close to my son since and wasn’t getting close anyway, because he works with the public. I don’t think I would have been exposed, but who knows?! I often think that not knowing is some of what’s driving people crazy, and crazy is what they are showing themselves to be! Our country seems to be going to shit

lately, on top of this virus that wants to kill us and wreck our economy, social connections and the world as we know it. That’s all making peo- ple overloaded with negative emotions and neg-

ative reactions. Some of the things this virus has changed are better left behind. Some of the adaptations we’ve had to learn and implement will

move us forward, and we’ll wonder why we did- n’t do them sooner. Some will be a nuisance and others will be very painful, but in order for a species to survive it has to continually adapt and evolve. Viruses do, so we have to as well. It seems we’ve had a nice long stretch

without a virus that could potentially wipe out a majority of our population. We’ve had plagues, diseases and events along the way that surely have been devastating, but it’s been over 100 years since the Spanish Flu. That seems to be what virologists and others are comparing to Covid-19. I go through stages and spectrums of

feelings. I have felt fear, shock, denial and more. Fair warning, as is often the case, right now I am pissed! This virus is bad enough, but the way people are making it into something more complicated, divisive, political and ridicu- lous is pathetic! The virus doesn’t give a good damn if you believe in it or not! It doesn’t care if you believe in science or understand how it works. It’ll kill you either way and keep on
