Academy launched to fill vital social care roles across Doncaster
A Doncaster Social Care Academy has been launched to recruit people to various paid roles across the adult social care sector in response to the coronavirus crisis. Doncaster Council has set up the academy to help get people quickly
into a range of temporary roles. Jobs range from compassionate carers through to important supportive roles such as cleaners and cooks. Councillor Rachael Blake, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said:
“We need more social care heroes to join our fantastic teams based across the borough who are making a daily difference to the lives of our vulnerable residents. We realise it is a difficult and uncertain time for everyone right now - your support will have a huge impact in helping our most vulnerable people and their families over the coming weeks. “Adult social care roles are tremendously rewarding, no one day
is the same and I am confident that there many people in our communities who will have what it takes so if that’s you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the academy. Also, do remember we are not just recruiting for carers, we also need people to help keep the sector running and these jobs are vital too. “We’ve got a brilliant group of organisations working to
‘Adult social
deliver care for people in the borough, both in care homes and in our communities. They have been managing well up to now but we know that things will get tougher, with more Doncaster people becoming unwell and with the likelihood that some staff themselves will need to be off work for a period due to sickness. We also know we’ve got a number of local people not working at the moment for whom employment in one of our varied roles could be a great opportunity.” The academy will quickly match the skills and experience of candidates with the jobs available.
Care home provider gives staff a pay rise
A leading care home provider is upping the hourly rate of his minimum wage care assistants with immediate effect to give them ‘the respect they deserve’ as they care for the most vulnerable in society in the on-going coronavirus crisis. Roy Young, whose Silver Healthcare employs over 60 staff in the city, has pledged to pay them £10 an hour for the next month out of his own pocket - an increase of £1.79 an hour. The 21.8% pay rise will given to
all members of staff employed by the company. Roy said: “There has been a
great deal in the news pledging support for the great work of NHS staff. People often forget the army of dedicated care staff that work in care homes like mine. They're turning up everything day to protect and care for the most vulnerable people in society and the majority are on minimum wage. They continue to come into work whilst the rest of the country stays indoors to protect themselves from coronavirus. They are under great stress and they deserve more.”

funding together with the chronic shortage of qualified staff forced him to shut his biggest home - Fulwood Lodge - in November last year, after over 20 years of service. But Roy Young was still determined to give a boost to staff working in challenging circumstances despite the continuation of inadequate funding in the sector. Roy Young added: “I’ve worked
in care over three decades and the situation was already incredibly challenging. If any good comes out of the present situation it will be to realise the vital importance of care staff that do an amazing job for very little reward.”
