60/ APRIL 2020 THE RIDER 2019 Jumping Youth Bursary Recipients Equestrian Canada Announces

Ottawa, ON, Feb. 14, 2020 – Equestrian Canada (EC) is pleased to announce the hard-working young ath- letes who were chosen by the EC Jumping Committee to receive Jumping Youth Bursary funds for 2019. In recognition of the

challenges young riders face as they strive to continue their education while com- peting at high levels of the jumping sport, the Jumping Youth Bursary was devel- oped for athletes between the ages 14-21 who compete in hunter, jumper and equi- tation divisions. The pro- gram is made possible through a generous donation by Mark Samuel, Kevin Sanford and the Samuel family. The following athletes

have been awarded $3,000 each through the 2019 Jumping Youth Bursary in

recognition of their hard work and dedication: Béatrice Daviault,

19, of Saint-Damase, QC, provides a shining example to fellow young riders of how to deftly balance suc- cess in the ring as well as the classroom. In the same way that she has progressed up the levels in the ring – from tackling provincial show jumping champi- onships at the 0.9m level to earning Reserve Champion in the 2018 Running Fox CET Medal National Final to successfully debuting her two young horses at the 1.40m level – Béatrice has similarly advanced in the re- alization of her academic goals. For many years, her concentration and persever- ance has been recognized with multiple scholarships, including the Boursière Fondation de l’Athlete

d’Excellence du Québec, Boursière Fondation Sports- Études and the Boursière Elte St-Hyacinthe. Béatrice completed her first year studying medicine at the Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe and was subsequently ac- cepted at the University of Montreal with the goal of being a family doctor or der- matologist. Well on her way to achieving her profes- sional dreams and with two young horses to carry her into the next chapter of her jumping career, Béatrice is poised for yet another year of personal, academic and equestrian growth.

Charlotte McLaugh-

lin, 16, of Ottawa, ON, has twice represented the maple leaf at the North American Youth

Championships,

claiming the Children’s team gold and individual sil-

ver medal in 2018. She is motivated in her riding by a desire to jump higher and faster, and that desire to soar is mimicked in her academic pursuits. Charlotte has been an honour student for the past three years, as well as the recipient of several aca- demic scholarships – all while maintaining a time- consuming training sched- ule at Millar Brooke Farm. She also believes strongly in giving back and has volun- teered for several charities, including The Peeps Foun- dation, which is dedicated to miniature horses, and Me to We, a social enterprise that funds humanitarian opera- tions worldwide. After grad- uating

high school,

Charlotte plans to study de- sign or architecture with the admirable goal of creating structures or modes of trans- portation that are space- and

climate-conscious. Her deep sense of care for and com- mitment to her surrounding environment, coupled with a strong work ethic and sense of integrity, make Charlotte a valuable asset to the vari- ous communities of which she is part.

Taylor Winther Blair,

17, of Prince George, BC, has woven her love of horses into every aspect of her life. Numerous division championships with the British Columbia Hunter Jumper Association serve as milestones on Taylor’s jour- ney up the levels in the hunter, jumper and equi- tation rings, from her first ti- tles of Pony Hunter and Pony Equitation Champion in 2015, all the way to her 1.20m Junior Jumper Cham- pion title in 2018. Having grown up on the family

farm, Taylor’s commitment to horses extends far beyond the saddle and includes breeding,

training, barn

management and more. She was awarded the George and Diane Tidball Legacy Scholarship for 2019, recog- nizing her work ethic and dedication to sport, sports- manship and leadership. Taylor’s all-encompassing passion led her to decide on a career as an equine veteri- narian at the tender age of seven. Since then, she has relentlessly pursued this goal, racking up hundreds of volunteer hours at local vet- erinary practices and main- taining top marks in high school as she turns her focus to university and vet school beyond.

Equestrian Canada News Release

QROOI/Ajax Downs News Update - March 27th 2020 The QROOI and Ajax Downs are working to

ensure that our industry can survive the Covid-19 pandemic. We understand that this is an unprece- dented time. As this crisis continues to escalate we are unable to provide you with a specific timeline for our return to racing. We will however continue to send out updates as they become available and encourage you to call or email the QROOI if you have any questions. At this time, we have decided to cancel the

first two weeks of training, this puts our first pos- sible training date at April 20, 2020. As we move forward in these unique and difficult circum- stances, we will continue to evaluate the start of training along with the start of racing. The QROOI and Ontario Racing are working

to develop an Aid package to help provide our in- dustry with some level of support. This package is intended to ensure that our horses continue to be cared for and trained. Details will be provided to you as soon as something has been approved. We ask that you please send your horse listings in to the QROOI at qrooiheadoffice@gmail.com as soon as possible. The QROOI Stakes entries are due as per the

stakes program but payments will not be due at this time. We feel that if changes need to be made to the stakes program that having the number of en- tries on hand when these decisions are being made

will result in the least impact to our membership. We are asking that all forms and nominations con- tinue to be sent into our office. The QROOI Annual General Meeting has

been postponed and combined with our Fall Elec- tion meeting in 2020. The QROOI office is closed indefinitely

however we are still checking the mail and answer- ing the telephone/email. The Horse Purchase Program payments that

are due June 1st will be postponed until November 1st.

We understand the uncertainty that this epi-

demic is causing for all of you. Please continue to self-isolate and practice social distancing and make sure that those of you that are returning from the USA self quarantine for 14 days to protect every- one. If you have any additional questions please feel free to contact any of the Directors.
