OMSSU goes to Kentucky
By Marie Beard The Ontario Mounted Special Service
Unit had the Privilege of attending the 35th annual Mounted Police Horse Colloquium in beautiful Lexington Kentucky. The Ken- tucky Horse Park was host to 100 partici- pants from September 24th to 27th, 2019 and was well run by the Lexington Mounted Police Unit and the Kentucky Horse Park Mounted Police Unit. The Colloquium itinerary is two days
of training classes followed by two days of competition classes. The instructors of the training classes are highly sought after and at the top of their prospective fields. Ex- tremely knowledgeable, yet very approach- able, they work hard to bring out the best in
the horse and human partnership and teach invaluable skills. The competition that fol- lows is a chance to demonstrate what you have learned by putting it to use. OMSSU worked hard to prepare for
this event under the guidance of Director Cindy Feurth, while still attending other events throughout the year in Ontario. Our Drill team (The Canadian Cavalry) was honored to have been asked to perform in the opening ceremonies. They put in many extra hours of practice, often receiving pos- itive pointers and quality advice form Ser- geant McCarthy and Training Officer Constable Houston of the Toronto Mounted Police Unit. With their help, we received a standing ovation for our performance and
that kicked off our week to a great start! The training classes were fun and very
informative. With four classes a day, we were in the saddle a lot, but enjoyed every moment. The comradery between all the participants was beautiful, we truly felt wel- come at all times. OMSSU came home with new knowledge and a great deal of pride in our accomplishments. Placing 1st and 2nd in Team Obstacle,
3rd and 6th in Western Equitation, 4th in English Equitation, and 7th and 8th in com- bined single Obstacle/Equitation, placing just out of the top ten for overall Unit points. We look forward to continuing onward
in 2020 and hope to see you out at some events!
