TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

CRIMOND PHARMACY TEAM, ABERDEENSHIRE When the pharmacy relocated to new premises which were purpose built to

house the GP surgery and the pharmacy, the space provided the opportunity for training facilities. Te team looked at the opportunity for hosting its own events locally and inviting all local pharmacy businesses and some GP surgery staff along too. Each month, the managers agree a topic that is right for the time of year and pertinent to news articles, health months etc. All staff at all levels in the company complete this topic and document in a log - even the Saturday staff who may only work four or five hours a week. Certificates are provided for attendance and delegates are asked for feedback on events in order to benchmark their success.

LINDSAY & GILMOUR PHARMACY SUPPORT

OFFICE, EDINBURGH Trough an extensive evaluation of recent patterns of recruitment across the business and wider community pharmacy network, Lindsay & Gilmour had become aware of a growing shortage of entry level, school and college leaver candidates expressing an interest in pharmacy as a career choice. As a result, in August 2019, the company undertook a major programme of attendance at university, college, schools and general careers fairs, in addition to offering work experience through many local schools. Following an internal review of its training processes, Lindsay & Gilmour also made a business commitment to introducing and promoting its own ‘Fast Track’ training programme to this diverse and talented recruitment pool.

MEVLVILLE CHEMIST, RUTHERGLEN M&D Green provides one of the best medication services for care homes across

Scotland. In working in partnership with many care homes, the company has transformed the medication training that it delivers. However, the company had recently recognised that a new training manual was required, which would encompass all training sessions past and present. In reviewing the company training, it was recognised that there was a massive gap in what the company had been delivering. Pharmacist, researched into the elderly patient and the physiological changes that occur that result in this medication burden and spent time with care home staff, gaining feedback into their understanding of why medications may be given out in different forms, strengths and dosages.

NHS LOTHIAN COMMUNITY PHARMACY

DEVELOPMENT TEAM, EDINBURGH Towards the end of 2018, the Community Pharmacy Development Team (CPDT) identified high-priority issues across pharmacy in NHS Lothian, which included or impacted on community pharmacy teams. Te team then approached the relevant stakeholders involved with each topic to discuss ideas and to ascertain if there was any current or proposed training plan. Tis was to ensure that the training need had been correctly identified and also helped gauge enthusiasm for the proposed events. Adopting this approach resulted in CPDT delivering seven bespoke training events between January-October 2019, including sexual health update events and a pharmacy interface event.
