MANAGEMENT OF TRAVEL HEALTH IN COMMUNITY PHARMACY

BARNTON PHARMACY, EDINBURGH Barnton Pharmacy is situated in North West Edinburgh and serves the residents

of Barnton, Cramond and Cammo. Tis affluent area has a high proportion of healthy older people who enjoy travelling, as well as families who travel long haul for work and pleasure. Reacting to the needs of its customers, who travel regularly and who were becoming frustrated at the lack of availability of local travel appointments, owners Sally Arnison and Leanne Carey decided there was an opportunity to build a business case to consider establishing a travel clinic in the pharmacy. Te travel clinic has grown year on year and now bringing increased additional income into the business each year.

PENMANS PHARMACY, JOHNSTONE To assess the travel needs of its local community the pharmacy team developed

a customer questionnaire for customers visiting the branch. Te questionnaire included asking patients about their travel priorities, and whether they considered travel health along with other holiday preparations. Te team found that the majority of customers traveling to Europe hadn’t considered vaccinations since they assumed vaccinations would only be required for travel to more distant destinations. As a result, the team deduced that a travel clinic could not only provide information about vaccinations required for traveling, but could also be used also to inform and educate people in respect to vaccinations, which are also recommended in this country.

REACH PHARMACY, GLASGOW Reach Pharmacy started its travel health journey over five years ago when

working with Novartis Vaccines and the Muslim Council of Great Britain/ Scotland to provide a meningitis ACWY vaccination services for pilgrims travelling for Hajj and Umrah. Reach Pharmacy then participated in the ground- breaking initiative known as the Pilgrim Health Programme in Glasgow, which was subsequently rolled-out nationwide. Te pharmacy team then approached the many diverse communities in the area, and spoke to the GP surgeries to ascertain the type of support they were looking for in a travel health clinic. As a result, Reach Pharmacy now provides a comprehensive travel health clinic for all communities.
