EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNITY PHARMACY PRACTICE
GALEN WILL, INVERURIE In light of the current crisis with regard to GP workload and the burgeoning
costs for the NHS, pharmacy contractor, Galen Will, felt that, as a community pharmacist, he could help to lighten the load for local GPs by providing a service, which would reduce waiting lists for the simple process of ear irrigation. Aſter taking an NES course on ear irrigation - a course, which was actually aimed at nurses – Galen discovered a new piece of equipment designed to carry out endoscopic microsuction. Aſter undertaking another training course, Galen has now consulted with 35 patients, helping to reduce waiting lists and easing the burden on the NHS budget.
MAHEEN JABBER, BOOTS Maheen’s research into health issues within the community identified a significant
need for a smoking cessation programme. Since the pharmacy is situated within areas of quintiles one and two of the most deprived areas of Scotland, Maheen knew that this was an issue that needed to be addressed. She began by arranging for herself and one of her team to attend a workshop to improve her own understanding of the service and then spoke to local health centres to initiate referrals to the pharmacy. She also trained her pharmacy team to have conversations with patients buying Nicotine Replacement Terapy products, cough bottles and hay fever products. Maheen then worked on keeping patients motivated throughout the full twelve-week programme.
REBECCA ALLAN, LLOYDSPHARMACY
TANNAHILL CENTRE Over the past year, pharmacist Rebecca Allan has been working in collaboration with Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (H&SCP) running a pilot drop-in diabetes clinic for patients who have a Type 2 diagnosis. Te drop-in clinic - based in LloydsPharmacy, Ferguslie Park - aims to review a patient’s medication management, to educate them so they have a better understanding of their condition and to advise them how they can actively manage their own self-care through better nutrition and increased exercise. Patients can attend just the once or, if they find the sessions beneficial, they can drop-in on multiple occasions in order to obtain the information and guidance they need.
