Integrated Systems Europe is the world’s largest exhibition for AV and systems integration. The 2019 edition ran from 5 to 8 February at the RAI Amsterdam and was the largest to date in terms of both exhibition space and attendee registrations. CES 2020 points to an 8K future


The Consumer Electronics Show (CES)marked the 50th year of the Consumer Electronics Show, and with the revolution in the dynamics of the display industry it is often the consumer sector that leads the way in innovative new display technologies.


In the pro AV, the last 5 years has seen a near obsession with the declining dimensions of display bezels. But what if there was no bezel at all – or at least one that is barely perceptible? CES 2020 saw Samsung announce an 8K, ‘bezel-less’ TV. The new QLED 8K, dubbed the Q950TS, uses 99 percent of its display surface for the image. With a 2.3-millimetre bezel. The whole TV itself is very thin at just 15 millimetres. The TV’s electronics include an AI-pow- ered upscaler for making content ap- pear as though produced in 8K reso- lution. Samsung has also introduced AI ScaleNet technology to streamed content look as good as it can. The new technology is said to prevent data loss in the journey from a streaming com- pany’s server to the TV. Interestingly, early adopters are said to include Ama- zon Prime Video.


The new TV also includes an adaptive picture setting that adjusts brightness and contrast depending on the TV’s surroundings. It also has support for Bixby, Amazon Alexa, and Google As- sistant. Samsung also includes a fea- ture called a Digital Butler, which can control Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-compatible gadgets and devices with an internet connection. The Digital Butler service is said to make your TV the center of your smart home. Paired with an IR blaster, users can control all kinds of devices directly from the TV.


Real 8K


Korean rivals LG Electronics were also active in the 8K sector, drawing the distinction between the its Real 8K experience and others. LG introduced its expanded 8K TV line-up next week at CES 2020 – eight TVs with new 77- and 65-inch class models joining LG’s existing 88- and 75-inch screen sizes. Not only do LG 8K TVs deliver Real 8K, they are also future proofed to provide customers peace of mind with multiple ways to enjoy the Real 8K experience. The new models offer the capability to play native 8K content thanks to support of the widest selection of 8K content sources from HDMI and USB digital inputs, including codecs such as HEVC, VP9 and AV1, the latter being backed by major streaming providers including YouTube. LG’s 8K TVs will


support 8K content streaming at a rap- id 60FPS and are certified to deliver 8K 60P over HDMI. LG’s latest 8K TVs also feature up- graded performance thanks to the new α (Alpha) 9 Gen 3 AI Processor. By le- veraging deep learning technology, the 2020 line-up delivers optimised picture and sound quality for all types of con- tent through AI-based 8K upscaling. Based on an intelligent deep learning network, AI 8K Upscaling delivers vivid and accurate 8K images by analysing the content and applying Quad Step Noise Reduction and frequency-based Sharpness Enhancer to increase lower resolution content to near 8K perfec- tion.


The 9 Gen 3 processor’s AI Picture Pro is capable of recognizing faces and text on screen, fine-tuning and sharp- ening each to produce more natural skin tones, well-defined facial features and clearer, more readable characters. What’s more, Auto Genre Selection recognizes the type of content being watched and automatically applies the ideal picture settings, guarantee- ing the best image quality among four genres: movie, sports, standard and animation. LG’s AI Sound Pro analyses and clas-


sifies the audio of content among five categories –music, movies, sports, drama or news – for clearer voices and richer, more textured background sound. Spoken words are isolated and their volume increased, making it distinctively easier for viewers to un- derstand while background noises are identified, and the scene up mixed to virtual 5.1 surround for a heightened level of viewer immersion.


On top of the exceptional viewing ex- perience, LG 8K TVs offer a new level of convenience made possible by AI technology. Users can monitor and control compatible IoT devices directly from the TV’s Home Dashboard, while Hands-Free Voice Control allows view- ers to easily control multiple connected devices with just their voice, even from across the room.


Creativity and technology


Sony’s CES booth introduced a range of initiatives under the ‘creativity and technology’ slogan, Exhibits ranged


from technologies Sony is pursuing in order to get closer to creators and users by enabling them to deliver ‘re- ality,’ such as high resolution video and sound in 3D space, in addition to ‘real-time’ technologies that support every stage of the production process through to the viewing experience. Sony days that it is bringing about a technological revolution at every stage of the creative process, from production to when content reaches audiences. For example, Sony conduct- ed a proof of concept trial in Decem- ber 2019, by capturing video of a live American football game with a 5G-con- nected camera, showing how 5G can allow for more creative and untethered camerawork while also reducing set-up time and costs.


Visitors to the Sony booth saw a vid- eo introducing this initiative, and also the equipment used during the trial including Sony’s PXW-Z450 shoulder camcorder, Xperia 5G mmWave device that enables high-speed data uplink, and a prototype transmitter box that encodes and transmits high-quality video in real-time.


Sony is also proposing new video experiences that further enhance the excitement of sports through AI-based real-time video analytics technology. The CES booth featured a table ten- nis demonstration by athletes, and the game will be captured on multi- ple devices including Sony’s HDC-P50 POV system camera and the cameras with Sony’s unique high-speed vision


sensors. From the image, the athletes’ postures and the flight path of the ball are instantly analysed, and CG characters will mimic the movements based on estimations of the athletes’ postures by deep learning technology. Sony’s unique Eye-sensing Light Field Display uses high-speed vision sensors and face recognition algorithms to en- able super high precision spatial reali- ty experience not found in conventional naked-eye 3D displays. It can be easily applied to VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) content, providing a versatile volumetric content creation environment to creators in various fields such as entertainment and prod- uct design.


The Sony booth also features a vir- tual production set which transforms the way motion pictures and TV shows are made. The set has been captured from the Sony Pictures studio lot as photo-realistic volumetric data and is shown as a background image on a Crystal LED display. The background changes in real time with the move- ment of the camera, ensuring the final image has the proper perspective and depth. Virtual production empowers the creator’s imagination by allowing directors, cinematographers, and ac- tors to experience the scene as if they are really present.
