eventually, and of course she loved it once she was in. They have been several times now and are all benefitting from it. In the meantime, we have been spending time with the babies as we call them, although some are now 6 years old, so not really young. Dad always gave his young horses plenty of time to grow, he didn’t believe in jumping the young horses very much. If you want a horse to still have a chance to jump well into its teens you need to take your time in their early years. We break our 3 coming 4 year olds slowing over the winter, they are just popping a very small course in a basic canter by the Spring then they go out in the field for the whole Summer, That gives them time to grow and get stronger before we bring them back in around October when the weather changes. That winter when they are turning five we slowly get back on and then start to get them out to clear rounds and when they are ready we register them and start at affiliated shows. So basically my young ones are ready


to go at five but they are very green compared to some horses which have been jumped all through their four year old year. Perhaps I should have asked for sticky breeches for Christmas.


We are only halfway through Winter and I’d like to be hibernating or holidaying somewhere hot away from all the rain we’ve had. Although that thought then brings you back to reality when I can’t help thinking about friends, family and animal lovers on the other side of the world suffering in the heat and coping with the terrible bush fires. Looking after animals in the wet in miserable and hard work but what they have been going through must be horrific. Roll on Spring for us and Autumn for them as fast as possible please.
