Why should I choose a career in equine? By Sam Lacey BHSII SM, Equestrian Centre Manager, Moulton College

The opportunities within the equestrian industry are diverse, ranging from hands-on grooming and riding jobs through to research positions with internationally regarded equine scientists and everything in between. The spectrum of different job types allows those who have a passion for all things horsey to pursue a career that suits their strengths and aspirations, with opportunities to travel both throughout the UK and abroad.

Choosing to study Horse Management at Moulton College is the first step towards an exciting career with horses, whether your interest lies in developing your riding and practical skills or you are more attracted to the scientific and business aspects of the equine industry.

Career options in the equine industry

After studying at Moulton College our equestrian students have either progressed to work directly in the industry or have continued their studies and gained additional qualifications. Here is an overview of just some of the career options available:

Equine Groom– Working as a groom is a hands- on position that is both rewarding and challenging. Depending on the industry sector, positions can include riding or others relating to horse care, including stud groom, yard groom and rehabilitation groom.

Rider / Trainer – There are plenty of opportunities if you want to ride as an occupation, whether that is within the racing industry or other competitive disciplines. Positions available range from work/ride out positions to trainers and competition riders.

Yard / Facility / Events Manager – The development of leadership and business acumen as part of their studies has enabled past students to progress onto either running their own equestrian businesses or operating organisations such as riding schools, livery yards and competition centres.

Riding Instructor / Equine Lecturer – If you have a passion for teaching and learning you could study additional qualifications allowing you to teach others to ride, and educate the equestrians of the future.

Business Administrator / Development / Sales Roles – Working either front of house or behind the scenes in any equestrian business requires a multitude of skills as well as knowledge of the equestrian industry. Skills developed at Moulton College have provided past

students with the opportunity to work for organisations across the sector including international companies, governing bodies and charities.

Equine Health Occupations – Given the breadth of the equine health sector there is also the opportunity to undertake additional training to become veterinary assistants, nutritionists, animal physiotherapists and scientific researchers.

Getting the best start

Finding a college which has a range of specialist facilities combined with a supportive teaching environment is crucial to achieving your full career potential. At Moulton College we have horses of varying levels from across the disciplines for both dressage and jumping lessons. There is also the option for students to bring their own horse with them to College and make use of the quality facilities. The variety of College horses provides students with plenty of opportunities to develop their practical handling skills including general ground work, long- reining, lunging and grooming.

One of the things that our College does exceptionally well is provide the opportunity for students to learn in an authentic commercial environment. Our state-of-the-art Equine Therapy Centre with Aqua Treadmill, Swimming Lane and Cold Water Spa provides students with a unique insight into applied equine hydrotherapy in relation to both training and rehabilitation. Involvement in the Equestrian Centre’s competitions and events also provides additional insight to students of the variety of career options open to them on completion of their course.
