JOE’S JOURNAL A
WINTER ! t the beginning of
December we bought a new mare called Nucarla
(Carla) at the Brightwells Sales held at Addington. She is a big
strong chestnut mare that we hadn’t really considered when we viewed them during the pre sale viewing but when she jumped in the evening we just loved her relaxed way of going and she has fantastic presence. We have been breaking her in and she has been so easy to handle and has a lovely kind nature.
Our more experienced horses have all been having a little
break. Tornado des Monts (Teddy), Kandleford (Tom) and Gunner (Romeo) have all been relaxing for a few weeks. I kept Cacharel (Cash) and Don Diego de Plata (Didi) up and fit for Olympia under 25s. I took Cash for the experience; she is ready to do more and I thought she would benefit from jumping there. Unfortunately, it was all a little bit too scary, we got around but she wasn’t keen on the bright advertising boards around the ring at all. At least she has seen them now and hopefully when we are in there again in the future, she will know what to expect. Cash and Didi have
also had a few weeks rest over the Christmas weeks since Olympia. We are very lucky to have a small indoor school that is great to turn out in when the fields are wet. We started giving them all a football to kick about but that wasn’t very interesting to any of them, then tried a human exercise ball but that didn’t last long. Then we were given a huge horse ball, designed for a horse to play with. They all love it, although Tom really should be signed up for a foot- ball team. He is excellent at dribbling and passing the ball. We have also made a few trips to Moulton College to their Equine Therapy Centre . We wanted to try a water treadmill; they are becoming so popular these days, so we thought we’d give it a go. We took Tom, Didi and Corloti (known as Loti, she is the mare out of Dad’s Olympic mare Corlato) Corlato was very stubborn. So stubborn in fact she delayed a flight once because she wouldn’t get in the crate. When it came to the Olympics, they had a crate delivered to the quarantine yard so she could get used to it by eating her breakfast, lunch and dinner in it every day. Well it turns out Loti is just like her Mum. The team at Moulton were extremely professional and took plenty of time getting the horses used to everything. Loti on the other hand tested all our patience, but with a calm and relaxed team from the centre coaxing her on with food (her greatest love in life) they got her on
