Business News Making a difference to food waste
The Triple Crown accredited Sheffield University Management School (SUMS) has been involved in a piece of important research looking at reducing food waste nationally. Dr Graeme Heron, of the
Executive Education department at SUMS, has developed an initial metric to measure redistribution and system performance at organisational level, where the output can be measured in terms of social justice food democracy and environmental impact reduction. The research team is now
investigating how they can utilise existing logistics networks to increase efficiencies and reduce waste nationally. This important research has
secured £4m of funding and is working in conjunction with Food Works Sheffield. In awarding the fund,
Environment Minister Thérèse Coffey said: “Food waste is unnecessary and morally unforgivable. We must end it, and our £15m fund is a true game- changer in making that happen. I am thrilled that this first round of funding will allow these terrific
projects to redistribute even more perfectly good food, making sure it ends up where it belongs - on people’s plates and stomachs.” SUMS’ vision is to be recognised
as a leading international management school known for delivering an outstanding student experience and impactful socially responsible research in a collegiate learning environment. The mission statement is to use its world class research to develop knowledgeable and employable students, promote socially-responsible work practices and have a positive impact on organisations and society. Working with important initiates such as the National Food Waste Fund is key to this. SUMS has also been

expanding its offering into the Executive Education sector. Working closely with organisations both locally and nationally, it is aiming to help bridge their skills gaps, utilising the available apprenticeship funding to up-skill and develop their employees and their organisation.
The Executive
Education portfolio, which includes Executive
MBA’s and MSc’s in Management and Strategic
Leadership, is designed to help learners develop into senior leaders in their organisations, by offering a contextualised learning experience, and the chance to build professional networks with like
minded professionals. This also increases staff retention and improves productivity. The Executive Education
department has recently relocated to a new dedicated space, located at the Western Bank Villas in the heart of the university campus. This innovative space gives the
learners a place to develop and grow in an exclusive environment, which combines cutting edge research with industry experience.
