WENTWORTH

Double for Escafeld Chorale celebrations

This December, the Gothic interior of Wentworth’s Holy Trinity Church will once again ring out with the classical sound of Escafeld Chorale as they present their revered Christmas concert.

On Saturday 14th December, the choir will host A Christmas Fantasia whereby members will be performing seasonal songs and readings, with the chance for some audience participation from the congregation.

Having become a mainstay event in the church’s annual calendar, this year calls for a special celebration as it the 25th anniversary for Escafeld Chorale’s Wentworth concerts, having performed at the church every Christmas since 1994.

But as with the festive season, silver is paired with gold as the choir also celebrates 50 years since its inception in 1969. The Christmas concert will be the glittering finale to a wonderful anniversary year which has included spring and summer concerts both well received in Sheffield, where the choir began. Back in 1969, the choir was originally called the Fossdale Singers, named after the road where its founder, music teacher Ron Law, lived. It was renamed Escafeld some years later after the old name for Sheffield.

Today, Escafeld Chorale is made up of around 80 members, both male and female, and is headed up by musical director, Dr Nigel Russell. Having studied at the London College of Music, Dr Russell was once part of the Philharmonic Chorus, has sang in front of Pope John Paul II for his 80th celebrations at the Vatican, and has been songman for Sheffield Cathedral Choir since 2003.

Although primarily made up of seasoned vocalists who perform choral music by the likes of Vivaldi, Bernstein and Tippet, the choir has also worked in partnership with Sheffield University since 2010 to offer an Associate Soloist position. Here, young singers from the university’s music degree course work with the choir for a full year to gain experience and develop their professional career. The position is currently held by soprano, Sarah Leffler, who hopes to become an opera singer.

Tickets for a Christmas Fantasia are £8 in advance or £9 on the door and include a programme plus light refreshments of mulled wine and mince pies.

The concert will begin at 7.30pm at Holy Trinity Church, Wentworth
