FEELING FESTIVE

Festive food and fayres

The countdown to Christmas isn’t complete without the annual trip to a Christmas market for mulled wine drinking, quaint gift buying and festive spirit revelling.

As the little wooden chalets and stalls begin to crop up across the country, we look at where to visit here in Yorkshire, from continental inspired markets to the more traditional affair.

LEEDS SHEFFIELD

From Friday 8th November to Saturday 21st December

Open Monday to Saturday 10.30am-9.30pm, Sunday 10.30am-7.30pm

From Thursday 14th November to Christmas Eve

Open Sunday to Thursday 10am-6pm, Friday and Saturday 10am-8pm

You don’t have to travel far to experience the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas as South Yorkshire’s principal festive market returns for another year. Once again, there will be around 50 cabins selling food and gifts along Fargate up to the Peace Gardens and Town Hall Square. Children can visit Santa in his grotto in the Peace Gardens or why not take the whole family on the popular Big Wheel to see the Steel City all lit up from a great height.

New for this year is the large Alpine Bar which will be based at the top of Fargate and will be open 10am-10pm every day serving hot chocolate, mulled wine, toffee apple cider and a selection of gins and beer. www.sheffieldchristmas markets.co.uk

For a German-inspired market, Leeds is the place to be with its annual Christkindelmarkt. Millenium Square will be transformed into a winter village with 40 wooden chalets selling gifts, decorations and continental foods. For the hearty appetite, there is the Bavarian-style Alp Chalet restaurant with authentic entertainment. Or grab an apres- shopping drink from the Ski Hutte or Kuh Stall.

Great for families, there is the

traditional carousel along with a free weekly children’s show every Sunday from 17th November between 11am and 1pm. Kids can have their faces painted or get a balloon model, take part in games and sing-alongs, or even meet the winter wonderland princesses. www.millsqleeds.com/ christmasmarket
