HEALTH & BEAUTY Know Your Risk

The Rotherham and Barnsley Be Cancer Safe team want you be aware and ‘Know Your Risk’ this November.

Movember

Prostate cancer is one of the most

common cancers in men however there is currently no screening programme available. It is often slow developing and there may be no signs for years but symptoms to watch out for include an increased need to pee, straining whilst urinating or a feeling that your bladder hasn’t fully emptied.

There is no single test but men over 50 have the right to have a PSA (Prostate-specific antigen) test if they have talked through the advantages and disadvantages with their GP. Men at higher risk can ask for the test before the age of 50.

Know Your Risk From a white background, risk increases over

the age of 50 to be 1 in 8 men. For black men, it increases over the age of 45 to be 1 in 4 men. If your father or brother has had prostate

cancer, the risk is 2.5 times more likely and you are at higher risk if your mother or sister has had breast cancer.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Lung cancer is one of the most serious forms of cancer and

47,000 people are diagnosed each year. Although anyone can develop lung cancer, it is far more common in smokers. After ten years of quitting, risk of lung cancer falls to half that of a smoker.

Symptoms include a persistent cough, coughing up blood, breathlessness and unexplained tiredness or weight loss.

Know Your Risk More than 40 percent diagnosed are

aged 75 or over; it is rare under 40. Although smoking is the main cause of lung cancer, you are at higher risk if you have had exposure to occupational hazards, such as asbestos and other chemicals like silica. Air pollution can also be of low risk to individuals.

World Diabetes Day

14th November Type 2 diabetes is a common condition which

causes blood sugar levels to become too high. But three in five cases could be prevented or delayed by maintaining a healthy weight, eating well and being active.

Symptoms include excessive thirst or needing to pee as well as tiredness. While it can be hereditary, it is also linked to being overweight and inactive and needs to be managed to prevent it leading to heart disease, nerve damage or vision loss.

Know Your Risk From a white background, risk increases

over the age of 40. For people of African Caribbean/Black African or South Asian background, it increases over the age of 25.

It is more likely to affect men and there is an increased risk if close relative has diabetes. Self-management education courses are available to help you prevent or manage diabetes or achieve remission.
