CHAMBER NEWS

The A46 is a major trade route between the East Midlands and the Humber Ports

Sajid Javid It’s a go on the A46 Newark Bypass

Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid has confirmed Government’s commitment to funding the A46 Newark Bypass as part of a national infrastructure drive announced at the Party’s annual conference recently. The A46 has long been

considered as one of the country’s most strategically important trade routes, especially the freight route between the East Midlands and the Humber Ports. However it continues to be

hampered by congestion; resulting

in bottlenecks and lost productivity. The Chamber, alongside partners

such as Midland Connect, Nottinghamshire County Council and Newark and Sherwood District Council, have been long-term advocates of improvements to the bypass, which would reduce congestion, improve connectivity and enhance the outlook for businesses of all sizes which rely on the A46 route. The issue has long been a

campaign priority for the Chamber while last year, Midland Connect,

the strategic body for transport, created a full improvement plan for the A46 which suggested the route creates an economic output of £115bn a year, equivalent to nine per cent of the English economy. Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at

the Chamber, said: “The A46 is a vital stretch of road, essential to businesses up and down the country, including, of course, here in the East Midlands. “However the current congestion

experienced by users of the route means businesses are being

hindered, not helped, in transporting vital goods and services which in turn support and create jobs and stimulate economic growth. “While more is required from an

infrastructure perspective to ensure our businesses are getting the assistance they need and deserve, this news that Government will commit to funding the A46 Newark Bypass is to be welcomed; it will undoubtedly have a real and positive effect for businesses here in the East Midlands and across the country.”
