Halesworth & Southwold Community News November 2019 21

FOR the third time running, the Halesworth Heritage Open Days, staged this year over the weekend of September 21st- 22nd, have proved a popular success with both townspeople and visitors from further afield. It was a weekend which provided the opportunity to find out some of the fascinating hidden history which passes unnoticed as we go about our daily business in the town and hundreds of people took advantage of the occasion. As people crossed the town

MORE POPULAR THAN EVER between visits to open houses or followed one of the tour leaders on themed expeditions, there was a general buzz of enthusiasm. Traders in the town reported increased footfall over the weekend. With seven historic houses generously opened to visitors by their owners, a choice of four themed walks and many other sites putting on special events and displays, there was plenty for people to choose from. Even then, demand outstripped supply; tickets for some of the most popular

properties sold

out fast, leaving many people disappointed but still able to enjoy the other features on offer. 150 people turned up at St Mary’s Church to witness the medieval play, ‘A Moment in Time’, produced and staged especially for the weekend while some of the walking tours produced unexpectedly large numbers. willingness of Halesworth residents to undertake large joint projects which, although time-consuming, are also enjoyable. Tickets to all the events were fully booked within hours, as were, later on, extra openings. It was popular! For those who were disappointed in not getting their first choice of visits, we hope there was plenty to compensate over the weekend. Next time we shall be looking at how we can improve booking arrangements and provide access to even more events and properties. In the meantime, the organising committee

News from Halesworth Community Church

WE have just returned from running a very successful course in Dorchester. This was part of our ‘Understanding Yourself’ series and, being a Step One, we were meeting all the attendees for the first time.

There were people

present from all walks of life – firemen, builders, teachers, a midwife, and so on. A couple of comments in the feedback give the flavour of the weekend: ‘Really enjoyable. Learnt things about myself I didn't know or realise and I am over 70 so never too late to evaluate your life' and ‘A journey bigger than I could have imagined possible in two and a half days!' The weekend was organised

by an ex-Royal Marine and his Headteacher wife. They have attended previous courses in Suffolk and been so helped that they wanted others in their area to benefit. We will return to Dorchester for a Step Two in February and another Step One in May. During November we

have a Step Two and Step Three here in Suffolk with people travelling in from different parts of the country. What makes these courses so popular? William James said, ‘Man fears what he cannot understand.’ On these courses people are helped to understand why they feel the things they do and how to handle what they feel. How
