20 November 2019 Halesworth & Southwold Community News

WELL where do we start?? What an amazing past year for the football club. 12 months ago we shared with you our ambition to really push the football club forwards both on and off the pitch following the acquisition of one of the best if not the best management team in the area in Carl Chenery, Carl Vincent and Tim Sparkes and boy have they lived up to every expectation and much, much more. With the two Carl’s and Tim came an influx of senior level players to tackle the season ahead in division 2 which in the end was comfortably won with 20 wins, 3 draws and 0 lost with local rivals Southwold Town finishing second 4 points behind. As well as impressive league form the 1st team were equally as impressive in both the league cup and the Junior Cup in which we reached the semifinal. A big thank you must go to the huge number of supporters that travelled all the way down to Greshams in Ipswich for the quarter final match against Tacket Street, which Town won on penalties after a hard fought 2-2 draw, and again for the semi final match at Woodbridge Town against Bacton Utd. Sadly the semi final was the end of the road for Town in the Junior Cup losing to a well-organized Bacton 2 nil. Along side the junior cup the league cup didn’t disappoint either with the team causing cup upsets to Wickham Market from the division above and more impressively East Bergholt Utd and Haughley Utd from the senior league, 2 divisions

higher. Unfortunately, this cup run ended in the quarter finals at dairy hill in what was a pulsating match losing just 1 nil against a very strong Achilles side who at the time were reigning senior league champions. Having said that though Town had several chances of their own and in fact as the game wore on looked the fitter and sharper team spurred on by an outstanding town crowd of around 250 – 300 supporters but sadly it wasn’t to be and the boys bowed out with their heads held high knowing they’d given their absolute all. A special mention must be given to our outstanding captain Toby Payne for hitting a very impressive 44 goals to help the team achieve its success throughout the season. It’s wasn’t just a 1 man effort though and equal credit must be given to the rest of the team who’s commitment and hard work both on the pitch and in training week in week out made this truly remarkable season possible. Looking ahead at the 2019/20 season over the summer break our excellent management team acquired the services of 3 further players with senior experience and these players have very quickly adapted to life at Halesworth Town. Town’s season has started very well with 7 matches played winning 6 and losing just the 1 to Ransome Sports this ending a run of 31 league matches unbeaten, a record dating back to March 2018. The lads soon got defeat out of their systems and

Team left to right: Tim Clack, Matt Bates, Jolyon Leak, Jordan Miles, Craig Leech, Adam Chenery, Dominic Keating, Andy Mutimer, Joseph Pinnington, Kieran Cadle, Mason Caplin, Matthew Thomas. Kyle Wythe, Conner Peck, Owen Wilkinson, Hayden Ling, Ben Hurren, Jordan Tubby, Cameron Hall

have since won their last 3 matches including a league cup win to set up a 3rd round match against league rivals Ransome Sports a game the players will sure to be up for with a score to settle following the league defeat. The team currently sit second in division 1 with back to back promotions and a place in the senior league a realistic ambition. Our reserve team under the stewardship of Matt Bates had a fairly mixed season, you may say a one of two halves with results not going all their way in the first half of the season but a very impressive run of victories following the Christmas break saw the team finish fifth in the league and with restructuring of leagues only just missed out on promotion. This season has seen a very promising start for the team. With the hugely experienced Trevor Chenery stepping down from playing first team football to add his fantastic leadership to the team and to support Matt they currently find themselves joint top of their league having most recently beaten table toppers Walsham Le Willows with their ambition too to gain promotion to the league above. Off the pitch works

has continued to further improve our facilities with Kerslake Construction kindly renovating the kitchen area in the close season at Dairy Hill so our special thanks go to those guys. Hopefully

when enough funds have been raised to purchase equipment, we will be able to offer hot food to players and supporters on match days! The close season also

saw the acquisition of new grass cutting equipment to enable our chairman and groundsman Adrian Waters to maintain what we believe is one of the best playing surfaces in the Ipswich & Suffolk League. Thanks goes to the Halesworth Community Sport & Leisure Group who’s funding in addition to grant funding from the Football Foundation made this happen. As with any local club,

we would not be able to operate without the support of the local committee so we would like to thank our main sponsors; Kerslake Construction, Chinneys Sports Bar, Heaveningham Hall Country Fair Trust, Overton Surveying and Yellow Brick Mortgages for their kind support. And finally a most special

thank you from everyone at the club also goes out to all of our supporters that create the amazing atmosphere both at Dairy Hill and away from home each week. Fixture lists will be posted in the committee news each month. Admission is free and a fully licensed bar plus tea and coffee is available at each match.
