2 November 2019 Halesworth & Southwold Community News
IN this month’s Community News you may have noticed a separate leaflet produced by the Town Council. We hope you will find some useful information on the leaflet regarding transport in the town as well as a list of services that the Town Council, District Council and County Council deal with on a regular basis. It is often confusing to know which council deals with
what, so hopefully you will decide to keep the leaflet for future reference. The Town Council has also presented, in summary form, its four year strategic plan on the reverse side of the leaflet. The strategic plan has 8 objectives; the things we want to achieve for the town during our term of office. The full version of the plan says how and why we want to achieve these
objectives, when we aim to have them completed and which Town Councillor will take the lead on behalf of the Council as a whole. The full document is available on the Town Council’s website and we would welcome any comments from residents. The

Town Council is pleased to announce that there have been more projects in the town completed recently. A new bench, dog bin and signage at Gainsborough Drive, a new bin has been installed and two benches (to follow shortly) at Old Station Rd and a new replacement bench has been installed at the junction with Wissett Road and Mill Road. Most of these
are funded from S106 monies which are generated from housing developments or from the Council’s repairs and maintenance budget. The Clerk’s office has received some concerns from residents about speeding vehicles in various parts of the town. Speeding enforcement is a matter for the Police and is not in the Council's jurisdiction but the Town Council takes these concerns very seriously. The Town Council has the
use of vehicle activated speed signs which we share with our neighbouring councils but these can only be positioned in designated areas, approved by the SCC Highways department and the Police for example; Saxon Way, Norwich Road and Holton Road. However these devices are used essentially for calming traffic and collecting
data on the road usage. Individuals can, however, volunteer for the Community Speed Watch programme, please see the following link for more information or contact the Clerk’s office. www. communityspeedwatch. org/ At the time of writing
the 10th Annual Scarecrow event is fully underway; the town is decked out with an amazing variety of scarecrows made by businesses and organisations. This year the event is embracing new technology with the Golden Pumpkin hunt, which utilises a mobile phone application to give unique coordinates throughout the town.

IT was very gratifying to see so many visitors attending Dr Isabel Skypala’s talk on allergies. She is a dietitian from the Royal Brompton Hospital, her field being Food Allergies, food hypersensitivity and food intolerance but at her lecture to us she concentrated on allergies. It was a very informative and interesting talk, she went into the subject in such depth that it is difficult to report on all aspects of the lecture. We were informed that there are several theories as to why children seem to have more allergies now compared with the past. One is that Mothers are being advised to breast feed for longer with no solids being introduced into the diet for six months. However, it is important that babies and young children should increase their food diversity to help them develop anti bodies.
Peanut allergy is one of the very common allergies, in one study Mothers were
encouraged
to give their babies peanuts, and interestingly none of the babies developed an allergy. Milk is also a common allergy in children but often they can tolerate cooked milk. Isabel pointed out that rice and oat milk is not a suitable substitute and can cause malnutrition as they don’t contain
vitamins
or much protein. Very often allergies will have gone by the age of eighteen and adults are unlikely to develop any unless they inadvertently eat bad shell fish!
Next month is our AGM followed by a talk by Marie Limb – Hair today Gone Tomorrow which may or may not be more light hearted.
