When gardens go to sleep

Winter will soon be upon us, so there is no better time to look ahead and prepare for a new year and new life in spring…

s the year starts to wind down and many plants and animals prepare to sleep for the winter, we might be reluctant to get to work in the garden. But autumn is a great time to get outside and start preparing your garden for next year. Tere are a whole variety of hardy plants, such as violas and pansies, that thrive in the colder months and bring a welcome splash of colour to the winter months.

Our variety of colourful cyclamen can also be used to great effect to refresh your borders and baskets.

Now is the time to choose your spring flowering bulbs and we have a fantastic range in store for you to get your hands on. Autumn is the optimum period for

planting these; not only will they have more than enough time for their roots to take hold before the spring comes, but the ground is still accommodatingly warm from the summer months of sunshine, allowing them to flourish.

If you’re feeling creative, you could turn your hand to a “bulb lasagne”, which will provide lavish layered colour to your garden in the spring.

Autumn is the time to give your lawn some much needed atention. Ensure you distribute a good autumn feed now to keep them healthy and tough throughout the winter months. In addition, leaves should be regularly raked off of your lawn to prevent waterlogging.

If you store these leaves in dustbin bags and leave them in a quiet corner, then in about a year you will have excellent leaf mould to help strengthen and nourish your soil. Just check that bags have a few small holes in the botom, sprinkle the leaves with water and seal the bags up.

To round off the seasonal treats, now is a great time to enjoy our selection of dazzling Japanese acers.

As temperatures drop and daylight hours reduce, watch them turn your garden from summer green into blazing autumnal hues of orange, scarlet, crimson and yellow. Words supplied by Coolings Poted Garden Nursery
