LOCAL TABER SUPPERS continue to build community

BY COLE PARKINSON insight magazine

With churches Knox United, St.Augustine and St. Joseph and St.Theodore’s Anglican hosting different types of community suppers, it allows for residents to gather at the dinner table. While the traditional fall suppers are held in

October/November, Knox United also hosts Irish stew suppers in the spring and St.Theodore’s Anglican has hosted a Pancake and Sausage supper in the past. One of the longer standing traditions is the St.

Augustine and St. Joseph Fall Supper which has been ongoing over decades. “We have a group of volunteers that start (planning) in

September usually and it takes a few hours. We have peo- ple who work on different tasks to get going,”explained Darla Machacek.“For ours,we purchase the meat from a local group that will cook the meat for us.Then we have donations from community and our parish members for the other food.”

While the suppers are a tradition at this point for each

respective church, the numbers are still continuing to grow.

Another big reason for this is due to the take-out option offered by each supper and Machacek reports they are seeing a steady stream of people coming in to sit down and for take-out.

hile Taber and area promotes a communi- ty-minded atmosphere, that is never more apparent than with the numerous suppers held in the town.

“I think we were up to about 750 and of that,we

served over 200 takeout meals,”she said. Knox’s last Irish Stew Supper held this past March had

costs of $10 for adults, $5 for children aged six to 12 and five and under is free while family admittance was $25. Both Knox and St.Augustine and St. Joseph fall sup-

pers are held in November which are priced at $15 for adults, $6 for children aged six to 12 and five and under is free. “The money for our parish, St.Augustine’s, is shared

between the parish, the CWL (Catholic Women’s League) and Vauxhall’s church. Then it goes to the church and community things,”said Machacek. While there is a money aspect to these suppers, the

real benefit is seen as being a way to gather the commu- nity in one place. “It really is very community building. As far as our parish and the whole community, everyone comes out and it is a chance to socialize. Lots of people stay and visit for awhile and some people who have moved out of the community come back for it,”said Machacek.“It’s a great thing and I hope it continues on for many more years.” “It’s an opportunity for a fundraiser but more for to

build community in our parishes. It also allows us to have a meal and celebrate with our community,”added Tamara Miyanaga. Even though these suppers are organized by specific

churches,Machacek pointed out anyone can come and grab a meal. Next up,both Knox United and St.Augustine and St. Joseph will host their annual fall suppers in November.
