October,”said Hughes. With a lot of discussions already taking place, plant protein expansion

into the M.D. of Taber may soon be a major factor and source of econom- ic development. With that said, Hughes explained it isn’t so much about rushing those

event has been held outside of Europe, speaks volumes to the investor interest in the Alberta region.Having that audience in our backyard, that’s a great stage to showcase what we grow, what we can grow and what we can do,”continued Hughes. In attending the summits, the M.D. along with the other municipalities in the area are hoping to get a good word out about the possibilities the region can bring for plant-based proteins. Even further for the M.D., they are excited to have discussions with those companies who they had a chance to interact with during the summit in France again. “The CPFC is looking to make a splash and attract investors to our

region.Working with our partners, the Town of Taber, City and County of Lethbridge, and many others in the province,we are hoping to get our name out there and bring increased interest to our areas. For the M.D., this summit,we are looking to touch base with some investors we met in Lille, France. We’ve got meetings, networking events and planning ses- sions we hope may seal some deals or, at the very least, impress some global investors to take notice of the major strides we’ve done since last

opportunities, but making sure they are viable and able to stand on their own two legs when they do make their way to the municipality. “It isn’t so much about how close we are (to bringing plant proteins to the M.D.), but rather how sustainable it will be for the M.D.We’ve made great strides in the areas of business attraction, labour stability and edu- cation and research. These were things that needed a big boost in the last year.Working with the Town of Taber,we’ve collaborated on Strategic Economic Development Plans and Housing and Labour Studies. All important facets to growing our economies, which includes plant and alternative-based proteins. An example of alternative-based proteins is Enterra.A company that uses bugs as animal feed.A company that has looked at the M.D.and region as a destination for possible growth and expansion. FCL’s (Co-op) recent announcement in the area is also a boost for other investors looking to grow here in the M.D. Supporting our exist- ing businesses is critical to our success, too, and plans are underway to expand our support. Lots of great things are continuing to happen here in the M.D., with ample room to grow.” Another benefit for both growers and consumers in the area comes in the fact that locally-grown products will hopefully be available at local grocers.

When plant proteins do make their way to the M.D., Hughes fully

expects for consumers to be able to purchase the locally-grown products in their neighbourhood stores. “They can and that is the goal. We’ve seen it already in the area of plant

proteins, like the Beyond Meat Burger. I expect that locals, and people all across the world, will one day be dining on food grown right here in the M.D. of Taber.Currently,we know our produce is already making the rounds in supermarkets and storefronts across the country, but one day, we’ll be famous for corn and protein.”
