‘Breakfast on the Dairy Farm’ comes to King’s Lake Colony

BY JUSTIN SEWARD insight magazine

Foremost - for the first time on the colony in the County of Forty Mile on June 8. The King’s Lake Colony Dairy Farm was one

A

of three locations selected for 2019, which also included events in central and northern Alberta. “It’s a volunteer thing where I signed my name last

year already,”said Joe Welener, who is heading up the colony’s event. “I thought it would be a good idea to have one

here in the south and have a breakfast. (It’s) not only a breakfast, but breakfast on a colony where people can come and have a look at the operation and just have some good food and show the kids what it’s all about.” “As far as hosting, I felt I owed it to the people out there that don’t have the chance to go to a farm or visit a dairy (farm). I think it’s a good thing to have the kids (and) parents come together and have a good visit and a good meal.” Welener says he feels lucky to be telling the community about his passion.

“I love to tell people what goes on at a dairy

farm,”he said. “There are a lot of miscon-

ceptions out there.I was always a firm believer in what God made is

made well.No man can make it as well as he did. When he is eyeing the cow and milk, it’s good and it’s wholesome.” Welener believes there are misconceptions out

there in the dairy industry of the cows not being treated well, an issue that he calls “so far from the truth.” “It’s very simple. If we don’t take care of these animals, how will they perform?”he questioned. The day involved tours of the barn and an educa- tion lesson on how the milking process works, the feed that is given to the cows, learning how a calf is born and how it becomes a milk cow in 24 months. “Just literally the process of what goes on in the dairy,”he said.

“And how the milk is getting shipped, how it’s getting graded and the safety behind it.The cleanliness we have to follow and the rules and regulations, so the consumer has a very healthy and safe product.” Upon his arrival at King’s Lake in 1976 from the

Warner area,Welener and his brother decided to put a big tank in and started to milk cows as there was a high demand. “I was only 10 years old at the time and I was helping my brother here at the dairy,”he said. “We slowly increased and went up to about 90

cows. In 1997,we increased to 110 and in 2003 we built a new facility and we’re currently milk- ing 160 cows.” The milk truck comes every other day and

transports the dairy product to three cheese plants in Lethbridge,Diamond City and Glenwood, respectively.
