CALLING ALL SINGERS! COCKERMOUTH HARMONIC SOCIETY

Cockermouth Harmonic Society’s new season has started. This is a great opportunity to try something new or return to the pleasures of singing in a choir. Why not come along and have a try?

We currently have 60 singing members and sing music from the great classical repertoire, as well as modern arrangements and new commissions.

This season, the choir will start its programme with arrangements of Shakespeare songs. Many composers over the years have taken songs from Shakespeare plays and set them to music in a variety of styles - classical, jazz and contemporary. Our concert will be performed on 18th January 2020.

In the new year, we will be rehearsing Haydn’s Nelson Mass for a performance in March 2020.

Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings during school term-times in the United Reformed Church on Cockermouth’s Main Street starting at 7.15pm.

New members are always made welcome. There are no formal auditions and new singers can enjoy a free trial period. For more information, visit the choir website, or contact the Chairman on 07715 104 746.

CHORAL SOCIETY TO

PREMIERE NEW COMPOSITIONS BY LOCAL COMPOSERS

Keswick Choral Society has announced its programme for 2019-2020 season. Following last season’s very busy and well-received series of performances, there is certainly something to live up to. Both established works and new commissions by local composer’s feature in the coming months.

Cumbria Limited

● New installations and alterations ● Fault finding ● Inspection and testing ● Spotlights and floodlights ● New consumer units and replacements ● Smoke, heat and CO detectors ● Re-wires and new builds ● Competitive rates ● Friendly and reliable service

Rehearsals started on Tuesday 3rd September and the first event in the calendar will be Choral Evensong at St. John’s Church, Keswick, on Sunday 27th October at 4.00pm. This will include anthems by Christopher Tye and Charles Wood, settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis by Herbert Murrill, and Preces and Responses by Smith of Durham.

The annual Festival of Christmas Music, which offers the audience the opportunity to join in a selection of popular carols and Christmas songs, is always very well- attended by both Keswick residents and visitors - it’s a good idea to get your tickets early! Take your seats in good time for 7.30pm at Crosthwaite Church on Tuesday 10th December to hear ‘Fantasia on Christmas Carols’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams and ‘In Terra Pax’ by Gerald Finzi. The programme will also include a new carol from Tamsin Jones, ‘Be Merry’, commissioned by the Society. Ms. Jones is a lay clerk at Carlisle Cathedral.

In 2020, several Society members will participate in the Cumbria Rural Choirs

concert on 21st March at Carlisle Cathedral, marking the 250th anniversary of the death of William Wordsworth. They will sing Finzi’s setting of the Wordsworth poem ‘Intimations of Immortality’, but of particular interest here, will be the first performance of newly composed cantata ‘Springtime in Lakeland’, which has been commissioned from the Society’s own Musical Director, Ian Hare. Tamsin Jones’s setting of ‘The Daffodils’ is also to receive its first performance.

The Spring Concert on 18th April 2020 will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Beethoven with his Mass in C. This will be contrasted with music in a lighter vein, including contemporary gospel choruses arranged by Ken Burton as ‘Feel the Spirit’ and a second chance to hear Mr. Hare’s new composition.

Canon Hardwicke Drummond Rawnsley needs no introduction to readers, and the centenary of his death will also be commemorated during May 2020 at Crosthwaite church, where he was vicar for 34 years from 1883. Keswick Choral Society will join the church’s own choir in this celebration, at a service to be held on Friday 22nd May.
