ALL THE LATEST NEWS, VIEWS AND STORIES FROM AROUND YOUR LOCAL AREA:SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER WE’RE JABBIN’!

As is always the case at this time of year, I get heavily involved in our flu vaccination campaign. As well as being a valuable source of income for us during what is a ‘difficult’ time for community pharmacy, it is always a source of pride, as our small rural Cumbrian pharmacy consistently delivers a service that punches well above its weight.

There is always some drama attached to the service and it’s usually to do with the availability of vaccine. There are a few issues surrounding the under 65s vaccine this year but my biggest gripe to date, is with the powers that be.

We actually received our over 65s vaccine on the 27th August which on the face of it sounds great. Unfortunately, we must wait for something called the Secretary of State directions to be made before we can start jabbing in earnest, so I was forced to look longingly at a fridge full of jabs I wasn’t allowed to use yet.

The week in question was the one where our latest Prime Minister decided to ask the Queen if he could take us on a Brexit adventure, so I think the Secretary of State for Health was too busy going through his previous Tweets trying to remember what he said his stance was on this, to sign off our flu service.

Anyway, we’re up and running now and we’ve already managed to vaccinate many patients and look forward to seeing many more of you before the season is through.

NO DEAL NOT IDEAL?

Unfortunately, I don’t think that I can keep this article Brexit free, as it’s a topic that is dominating all our lives at present and medicine is an area that is causing considerable concern to many - us included.

As we get closer to the deadline, we are receiving more and more queries over how a ‘no deal’ Brexit will affect specific medications. The honest answer is that we don’t know and those making promises or declarations either way, are doing so based on guesswork. Although I was recently in France and Germany on my holidays and the pharmacists over there looked much calmer about things!

The one thing I can say, is that we are seeing many shortages already and when high profile shortages such as HRT or anti-epileptics make it into the national press, your local pharmacy has been trying like crazy to overcome the problem for a good while already.

It is difficult for patients not to panic and as a pharmacist, it is very difficult when you can’t obtain medications that used to be run-of-the-mill. We didn’t study pharmacy for the pleasure of phoning a wholesaler call centre in Glasgow to beg a dictator wearing a headset for a few tablets to keep our patients alive but that seems to be the job nowadays.

So, bear with us and remember that we are on the same side. A patient happily walking out of the door with the exact same medication they were prescribed was once a formality but at present, is something to celebrate, so watch out for the high-fives!

THE INSPECTOR CALLS!

I was recently reading in the pharmacy press about a situation where an individual was masquerading as a pharmacy inspector to gain access to medication from a couple of pharmacies in Cambridgeshire. The person had also impersonated an official from the Care Quality Commission to visit a couple of GP practices.

I can’t imagine the distress for the pharmacy staff involved. Not the fact that they had been hoodwinked but the fact that they thought their inspection was over with for a while and that they are now in fact even more likely to get the real thing in the very near future.
