Recently I have been reminded how much we can achieve when we work together, which is why Chambers of Commerce were originally founded. Ours is no exception as 206
years ago, ship merchants on The Barbican realised the strength they had in unity. I wonder what they would make of us now as we work with our members to make the business environment better for us all. Nowadays, this needs to include the natural environment and the cultural offering, which are proven to have significant benefits for all of society, which of course includes business. It is for these reasons that the Chamber has been proud to support a number of initiatives and help
make them a success. The Elmer Trail is a great fundraising and awareness campaign for St Luke’s Hospice, but is also a wonderful cultural attraction and promotional tool that adds value, in the same way that the Nancy Astor statue is more than just a commemorative object. We are raising awareness of the opportunities around Mayflower 400 within the business
community and will be running a series of workshops later in the year to help members discover how they can engage employees and promote themselves to a wider audience using it as a vehicle. We are happy to be the first to support the Road to Mayflower Forest, which will see a thousand silver birch trees planted at Marsh Mills as a beautiful legacy gateway into Britain’s Ocean City that will also help combat pollution. The issue of pollution caused by plastics is becoming more widely known and we are doing our bit,
endorsing the Plymouth Plan for Plastics Code of Conduct. The protection and promotion of our natural environment is one of the key components of Plymouth’s bid to have the country’s first National Marine Park. But the park is about more than that; it is the joining up of everything in, on, under or beside the sea that will bring a real sense of identity and civic pride from which we will all benefit, whether we are in Plymouth, Devon or the wider region. Across the region, our work with British Chambers of Commerce South West (BCCSW) continues
and we have been working with the Local Enterprise Partnerships on the Local Industrial Strategies that provide a blueprint for future clean growth. We will be pulling together our first regional event that will showcase the skills, opportunities and potential of our region while providing tangible help, advice and support for our members. On the subject of support, we are delighted to be working with Inspire and the Growth Hub to offer a scale-up programme to enable businesses with high-growth potential to really flourish. It is by working together on all these things that we will do what we are here for and help our members to connect, grow and succeed.
