Entrepreneurial insurance firm is still flourishing 132 years later

The name ‘TH March’ has been synonymous with insurance for the UK jewellery trade since 1887. Certainly, that was the reason the business was founded 132 years ago when the eponymous Thomas H March (‘Tommy’ the 18-year-old son of a Hatton Garden diamond dealer) had a ‘eureka’ moment and realised that most of the jewellers his father dealt with in Victorian London were completely uninsured. In a nutshell, the young

entrepreneur convinced Lloyd’s underwriters to back his idea and the rest, as they say, is history. Over many decades TH March

grew and diversified. The company gained Chartered Insurance Broker status in 2011 and today under the TH March Group umbrella offers chartered financial planning services and a raft of specialised insurance products that include: high net worth and high value home cover, personal jewellery & watch insurance, life & critical illness, private medical, income/mortgage protection and investment & pensions advice.

Another jewel in TH March

Group crown is undoubtedly its thriving commercial department which was originally established in the 1960s. Headed up by Chartered Insurance Broker Mark Evans, (37 years’ insurance industry experience, 13 years with TH March) the commercial portfolio boasts an impressive array of regional and nationally known businesses and

organisations across a number of sectors. These include: manufacturing and wholesale, the construction industry, the service sector, professional and legal services and the charitable sector to name but a few. Many are based in the Southwest and the list includes a number of household names; the Ocean Conservation Trust (the charity behind the National Marine Aquarium) being one of them. OCT’s Head of Finance Julie Barbour said: “It has

been a pleasure doing business with TH March for over 10 years and we look forward to continuing to work with them in the future. “With a quick and efficient team

who are always on hand to help when needed, their expertise is invaluable. With their National Service Centre based locally, they are responsive and we have met their team who support us in our charitable work. The personal touch from a national business gives us comfort that we are receiving the best service possible.” TH March’s National Service

Centre employs 70 local people and is located at Yelverton Business Park, Devon. A further 50 staff work out of

five offices sited strategically across the UK. Head office is in London at the edge of the Hatton Garden jewellery district with a further four offices in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and Sevenoaks. Traditional values, maintaining

the personal touch by visiting clients, being an active part of the community, embracing diversity, investing in high-tech operating systems and high quality training for staff is all part of what will continue to make TH March tick long into the future.
