The

Active Island

by Sophie Mathews Court

Location, location, location; that’s what it’s all about, especially when looking at laying down some roots or searching for the ultimate lock up and leave. But what makes a location?

More often then not, it’s the things that aren’t slapped all over the poster that grab our attention and capture our hearts, that is, if you can find them. Those magic things, the hidden secrets, the doing, the seeing, the experiencing, whatever it is that gets you going are ultimately what make one say yes, or no, after all, all decisions are 100% emotional. Without emotion, it’s almost impossible to recognise full potential or escape of reality. Personal emotions are far more compelling than a message that claims to be a certain something or solution. I know what makes me tick and you do you, so bearing that in mind, I’m going to share with you why I choose to live on this haven Island I like to call The Active Island.

My husband and I have the luxury of freedom and could live absolutely anywhere in the world but we choose the Isle of Wight. When I tell people, rephrase that, when I tell British people this, the response is generally a gasping ‘Why on earth would you live there?!’, with the concluding consensus being that I must be mad, isolated and incredible bored here. We run our own businesses and travel with them, so like everyone else we need easy access to London as well as its surrounding airports. Access is key, and although there’s a ferry in the transportation mix, the reality is, in just over 2 hours I can leave my front door and get into London for a meeting. The beauty, is that I can be back on the Island that same day to don my wetsuit for a sunset surf; a concept that is so absolutely out of this world
