Meet the Owners

No strangers to Island life, Oliver and Kate Michell moved to Bembridge from New Zealand’s Waiheke Island in 2017. They loved heading home via ferry to an Island paradise — and found that replicated here on the Isle of Wight.

“The commute is always so much nicer by ferry, with a coffee in your hand in the morning watching the sun come up over the sea, or with a beer, heading home as the sun sets. It beats sitting in traffic behind a wheel any day,” said Oliver.

Until they moved, they had little knowledge of the Isle of Wight, except for a short visit Kate made years ago, but they fell in love with Bembridge, with its safe, family- friendly atmosphere and its famed sailing community. The family love to sail, and Oliver and the couple’s 14 year old daughter, Freya, love windsurfing, paddleboarding and other water sports.

“We’ve found some great places offering water activities, such as Tackt- Isle Adventures, in St Helens, where Freya loves to get stuck in. We are also really close to Bembridge Beach and head down there all the time for walks with our dog, Bro,” said Oliver.

The house is in the perfect spot for washing off the sand, with a side entrance leading to a convenient wet room.

The south-facing house on Swains Road lets in so much light and warmth in the summer. Oliver and Kate love sitting in their relaxing summer lounge, with its large windows looking out over the garden. In the winter, they prefer to

sit in the main sitting room, which feels particularly cosy with the log burner lit in the evenings.

The house was originally built in stone, but has since been signficantly extended, clad and rendered. The impressive garden has been perfect for Freya and Bro to let off some steam and is relatively low maintenance thanks to some clever landscaping.

A typical week at home at the moment includes project managing renovations at the three-bedroom property, as well as planning their next renovation project at Bembridge Harbour. They plan to convert their new property to
