Meet the Owners

Charles Radcliffe and Hervé Verhoosel tell us there’s something about islands that makes people feel as though they’ve escaped. Which is one of the reasons why the couple, who recently moved to the UK from New York, decided to purchase a weekend home here in Cowes.

“We were looking for somewhere we could go at weekends with our son, who’s 13 and has autism,” said Charles. “He loves the beach and the sea and we’d always loved the Island. Something about crossing the water to get here separates you from any worries or doubts.”

“Growing up, my dad was a sailing enthusiast – he still sails today at the age of 90! As a child, we’d sail across to Cowes most weekends in summer, often tying up at the Yacht Haven and sleeping on board in tiny bunks. So Cowes was always part of my childhood. I love that our son now gets to enjoy that too – albeit without the yacht, sadly.”

Hervé grew up in Belgium, but discovered Cowes and the Isle of Wight thanks to Charles: “I’ve never been a sailor but I love the buzz of the sailing scene in Cowes. And on a warm sunny day, the Solent doesn’t look so much like the Solent: you could almost be on the Med.”

The couple first spotted the duplex penthouse apartment advertised in the window of Spence Willard in Cowes.

“We loved that it felt like a real seaside home, and that it’s arranged over two levels – one, which is cosy with sloping ceilings and wooden windows, and the other, perched on top of the roof, all glass and sun and with

breathtaking views of the sea and a wrap-around balcony,” said Charles. “The first thing we do when we arrive at the weekends is fling open the French doors and lean over the Julliet balcony in the kitchen to take in all the sights and sounds of the harbour.”

As well as beautiful views of the Solent from almost every room, the apartment provides fantastic open- plan living space and a breathtaking sky lounge on the fourth floor, with doors opening to a large roof terrace with panoramic views and ample opportunity for entertaining.

“We had a property to sell before we could commit to the purchase, but
