emission vehicles and by 2040 plans to manufacture 6.2 million hydrogen cars and build 1,200 charging stations. In December 2017 South Korea also announced Renewable 2030, a plan

to greatly increase its renewable energy capacity in areas including solar and new wind. To meet its ambitious targets, South Korea will need consultancy assistance from companies with a proven track record of success in the field. UK companies have already successfully participated in the development of off-shore wind in Taiwan, giving assurance of an ability to operate in North East Asia. South Korea also has a large pharmaceutical market, its biopharmaceutical market is growing fast, and it has one of the largest medical device markets in the world. South Korean companies and hospitals are interested in advanced technology in areas like dental implants, ultrasound, grafts and prostheses, biomaterials, picture archiving, communication systems (PACS) and opportunities for R&D collaborations as well as technology transfers existing in fields like oncology, cardiology, drug discovery, metabolic diseases and tissue engineering.

Companies in South Korea are increasingly willing to license products

from outside the country, presenting new and varied opportunities for UK companies in the healthcare sector. Generally, South Korea is modern and business-friendly, but there are

some cultural differences to be aware of – for example the preferred greeting style in business is a slight bow followed by a handshake. The business culture is of dynamic, rapid action, so be prepared for expectations of fast delivery and last-minute alterations. More practical tips to consider are that the numerical system counts differently from the UK. Make sure all numbers are written down and fully understood in any negotiations.
