MEMBER NEWS IN BRIEF

Scheme helps people and businesses to fight crime

CSSC is working in partnership with police teams to roll out a security scheme across the UK. Established in 2011 as part of

the security planning for the Olympic Games, CSSC is a registered charity that works in partnership with law enforcement and local authorities; membership is voluntary with no charge to join. The objective of the scheme

is to share security information with business to help make organisations and individuals more resilient to the threat of crime.

Kegworth hotel unlocks rooms for great escape

An East Midlands hotel has become the first in the UK to open a number of unique escape rooms ideal for businesses looking for a conference with a difference. The popularity of escape rooms rose to prominence

in the mid-2010s and is based on a Chinese game called Takagism. People have since been locking themselves in rooms

for fun, working together to find clues, solve hidden puzzles and decipher codes to escape a themed, locked room before a one-hour time limit is up.

‘Escape room experiences are perfect for away days, corporate entertainment, team building and recruitment’

The Best Western Premier Yew Lodge Hotel in

Kegworth, which also includes a Marco Pierre White New York Italian restaurant, is now looking forward to

welcoming those who think they’ve got what it takes to crack the codes and get out in time. The two new rooms have been themed as ‘USS

Redemption’ and ‘Houdini’s Last Secret’ and will be able to take up to six people each. With difficulty ratings of 70 and 62 out of 100 respectively, Heather Thornton, Director of Sales and Marketing at the hotel, is not expecting too many groups to make it out in time. She said: “Escape room experiences are perfect for

away days, corporate entertainment, team building and recruitment. We’re always looking for ways to diversify, and for new ideas to provide our corporate clients with. We’re confident that with this, as well as our 17 existing meeting rooms, Reeds Health Club and Spa, 113 bedrooms and our fantastic onsite Marco Pierre White restaurant, we’re offering a unique, complete and first- class conferencing option for businesses. “To be the first hotel in the country to open bespoke

internal escape rooms shows that, once again, we’re ahead of the curve.”

Student leaves her mark at Lubrizol

Long after student Alex Jackson finishes her placement with Lubrizol later this year, employees all over the world will continue to benefit from the work she does to keep the company’s huge image library up to date. Inevitably, 21-year-old Alex has

had to quickly acquire an in-depth knowledge of the company’s products and research, but is aware that many of the skills required are associated with social media which, as someone who has grown up online, she has a natural affinity with. This is just one way Lubrizol seeks

to benefit from the skills of young people who join its annual student placement programme, which this

year has seen 27 students take up roles across the company. Alex is currently part-way

through a degree in Information Technology Management for Business at the University of Derby. She said: “When I started, I was

conscious that I was young and had a lot to learn, but I was told that because I was coming in with a pair of fresh eyes, I could suggest ways things might be done differently. “Knowing you can have that

impact is really useful for young people starting out in the workplace because it gives you confidence that you can make a difference.” Another aspect is the variety. On

any given day, Alex will be having Skype conversations with overseas

colleagues, designing literature or acting as a spotter for the company’s drone operator. She has also played a leading

role in organising Lubrizol’s charity work, helping organise events and helping staff decide which organisation should become Lubrizol’s charity partner for the next two years. She said: “Staff chose the British

Heart Foundation and I’ve worked on loads of activities, some of which will continue after I’ve gone. “That’s helped my own

development and shown me a side to the company I’d never considered – how charity work brings different departments together and helps staff share knowledge.”

CSSC in the East Midlands, said: “Almost every day we hear about a new crime trend or an international incident and we all have to consider how that could affect our own work. The CSSC initiative gives businesses the advantage of sharing information quickly with their workforce, which helps build a good security culture. “All organisations need robust

plans for managing a crisis and some recent events illustrate the need to prepare for the worst.” Messages from CSSC range from sharing warning and training information to giving advanced details about public order situations. In the event of a major incident, such as a terrorist attack, briefing information is shared directly from the police counter terrorism team. Fraud alerts and cyber-crime information are also distributed.

Finance package enables firm to add skip vehicles

Following a recent finance package outlining ambitions to develop facilities throughout the business, Bakers Waste has taken its first steps in doing so through the acquisition of two brand new skip vehicles. An investment in the region of £150,000 has seen the fleet rise to over 60 vehicles. Since 2002 Bakers Waste has

rapidly expanded its customer base within Leicestershire and the East Midlands to over 5,000 customers. New trucks means more

capacity to deal with what has been an exceptional year so far in skip hire. More deliveries and exchanges per day results in satisfied customers and the ability to take on even more work than before. Bakers Waste offers skip hire

services in Leicester, Northampton, Milton Keynes, Kettering, Coventry and more. Furthermore, both new trucks are completely FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) ready.
