THE FIRST WORD

Welcome to the July/August edition of Business Network. At 92 pages, this is the largest edition of the magazine we have ever published; which naturally gives us even greater scope to showcase the excellent work being undertaken by members across our region. As has been well publicised, the Chamber recently updated its mission statement from ‘Enhancing East Midlands businesses’ to ‘Enhancing East Midlands businesses and communities’. The changes are minimal – two words in fact – but make a huge difference.

This is reflected in this month’s theme – Corporate Social Responsibility and enhancing our

communities’. Such activity is, of course, highlighted in each and every edition of Business Network – not

least in the Member News section which always includes at least two pages dedicated to what our members are doing in relation to CSR. Arguably, the scope of CSR has changed. As well as operating on a micro level – with

businesses and organisations supporting individual charities, for example – there is now a real focus on businesses playing a leading role in developing and actively contributing to the communities they operate in and serve; thus creating a virtuous circle by which businesses and communities can thrive symbiotically. Such work is evident in this edition’s Big Interview, which features Stephen Gould, Managing Director of Leicester-based Everards Brewery, who discusses the role it is playing in helping shape and enhance the communities around it. There is also an interesting focus feature from Chamber patron the University of Derby on

why it believes its civic responsibilities are so important and how this translates to its extensive activities in this crucial area. As ever, there is an abundance of stories from you, our members, as well as member-led

features relating to both Regenerating the East Midlands as well as Skills and Training. Business Network is a dedicated publication for you, our members. If you have a story, or

an idea, that you believe would be suitable for Business Network, please email magazine@emc-dnl.co.uk or call me on 0333 320 0333 ext. 2089.

Best wishes, Nathan Fearn Editor, Business Network
