CHAMBER NEWS
many businesses still don’t think about entering. “What we can do today, by
showcasing the Queen's Awards, is to flag these great opportunities to our members and encourage them to take a moment to think about entering, because it could actually be a real boost to their growth. “There are a lot of hidden
gems out there in a business sector that people simply aren't aware of and the Queen's Awards is one way of getting their names out there. “Many local firms are looking to
expand within the Commonwealth and these countries really do understand the awards and the role the Queen plays in the Commonwealth.” Winners of Queen’s Awards
are granted a Royal reception and presented with the award by one of the Queen’s representatives, a Lord- Lieutenant. They are able to fly the Queen’s Awards flag at their main office, and use the emblem on all marketing materials.
Entries for the 2020 Queen’s Awards close at noon on 10 September. Apply online at

...and you can nominate individuals for an honour too
Do you know someone who deserves to be recognised for their contribution to business and/or their community? The honours system recognises people who have
made achievements in public life and have committed themselves to serving and helping Britain. Whether someone gets an honour – and the honour
they get – is decided by an honours committee. The committee’s recommendations go to the Prime Minister and then to the Queen, who awards the honour. Anyone can nominate someone for an honour. You’ll
get an acknowledgment – but you may not hear anything for 12 to 18 months.
What people get honours for: • Making a difference to their community or field of work
• Enhancing Britain’s reputation • Long-term voluntary service • Innovation and entrepreneurship • Changing things, with an emphasis on achievement • Improving life for people less able to help themselves • Displaying moral courage
Honours are given to people involved in fields including: Community; Voluntary and local services; Arts and media; Health; Sport; Education; Science and technology; Business and the economy and Civil or political service.
The PM particularly likes to recognise people who: • Create jobs and economic activity, and support a global, outward-looking Britain
• Support children and young people to achieve their potential
• Aid social mobility, enhancing life opportunities and removing barriers to success
• Give their time to improve their local community • Work to tackle discrimination in all its forms
Do you know or work with someone who you believe deserves to be recognised in the Birthday or New Year honours list?
