~ WITH LUCA SHORTER AND ELSPETH LESLIE ~

Keswick School is located in the picturesque Lake District and is encompassed by stunning scenery. Being surrounded by such natural beauty influences our whole school community to strive to reduce our impact on the environment and to preserve the outstanding landscape. Keswick School has made radical changes in order to be more environmentally friendly; the initiative for these steps has come from the students’ passion to protect the precious world around us. Our catering department has made huge strides in reducing their environmental mark: all of the takeaway cutlery has switched from plastic to wooden; we have designated red bins which are specifically used for the recycling of plastic goods (these are located throughout school); plastic packaging has been replaced by new biodegradable packaging; when catering for the boarding students, no disposable cutlery is used and finally, a reusable water bottle has been designed by students and produced, with sponsorship from George Fisher, in an attempt reduce plastic waste. As a result of these new initiatives, the concerns of the students and the school community have been addressed.

It isn't just in the catering department where action is being taken to combat this pressing issue. We are lucky enough to have two biology teachers who have taken on the role of aiding the school in becoming more environmentally friendly. Work has been ongoing for over 20 years and includes planting over 120 trees, which have now become a distinct part of the Keswick School landscape and recycling paper for over 19 years. This was initially a major challenge, however, the perseverance and passion shown throughout the school now makes recycling the norm. The teachers also take a supportive stance when pupils come forward proposing new potential projects to benefit the environment and are always willing to assist in any way possible.

Keswick School is striving to help the environment as much as possible as we recognise the impact climate change and plastic has, not only our local community but on our planet as a whole.

The new senior prefect team for 2019/2020 have individual projects which they are keen to work on over this coming year. Examples include, raising awareness of and providing a student support system for those struggling with mental health; running charity events to raise money for local and national charities; making sure all students in the school can have their voice heard with our school council and super council system; getting students more involved with clubs and societies and simply being a great role model for younger students to look up to.

Mental Health is a pressing issue in the modern world and awareness of this should be raised. This is vital to ensure it can be recognised, in order to provide the essential help to support individuals. Our own deputy head boy is heavily involved in the charity YoungMinds® and recently participated in a national campaign raising awareness for mental health. He, and others in the senior prefect team, are keen to bring their experience and passion to help those not only in Keswick School but also the wider community.

All these projects are being pursued not just by the senior prefect team but the whole school and reflect the morals, values and beliefs which are encouraged and held with pride within Keswick School.
