I am Richard Johnson, based in the Vale of Lorton. I am an Estate Planner, who for the last fourteen years has been helping people in Cumbria put in place their inheritance planning documentation, all of which are now provided by Co-op Legal Services, a company regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. I cover the full range of planning possibilities including Funeral Plans, Full House Trusts, Wills that incorporate Trusts, standard Wills and Lasting Power of Attorney documents.

Each of us needs to accept that we are one day going to leave some kind of estate, be it large or small. Most of us would prefer that our spouse/partner, children, grandchildren, other beneficiaries will receive a decent proportion of what we have spent our working lives putting together if only that it will enable them to get on the housing ladder or go on to University without then being saddled with huge debts.

Estate Planning means taking a couple of hours to confidentially discuss properly with an experienced specialist what we can specifically do to try and ensure the best outcome. Bespoke options are frequently required because every situation is different. I rarely come across any new client who has actually already got their affairs comprehensively sorted.

The ‘down the line’ savings of having done such planning can be huge. We all have a tendency to ignore what appears to be ‘something we can sort out in the future’. However, life has a habit of throwing up unexpected events. By getting on and doing your inheritance planning you are creating a peace of mind for yourselves and more significantly for your intended beneficiaries.

As part of the ‘Co-op Family’ I adhere to and approve of the values and ethos of the Co-op movement and these include supporting the well-being of people in our community. For Co-op members the 5% Reward back to the member personally and 1% to local charities applies to all document purchases. You can join the existing four million Co-op members through me for a whole £1.

Anxiety is now the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder. It doesn’t discriminate and affects people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Unaddressed, it can lead to a state of permanent hyper- vigilance and to other, uninvited consequences – for example, panic attacks, social isolation, problems at home or work, or eating and body disorders. It causes the body to release the stress hormone, cortisol, which can itself lead to other unwanted side-effects in the longer term, such as weight gain.

However, it is possible to learn to release anxiety and to learn helpful strategies to manage it successfully, to reclaim yourself from its grip and to lead the life you want to lead.

What really matters to me most, is helping people to do just that and with their full permission to help others, I’ve shared one of my client’s stories, below:

Client’s story

Having struggled with what I later came to recognise as anxiety and depression on and off for most of my life, I reached a pivotal point in my illness in which I realised something had to change. Having had a brief spell of therapy in my late teens and it acting as more of a band aid than anything else, I was reluctant to seek out other kinds of therapies. What I wanted, was change and with Rosie that’s exactly what I got. Of course, when you find yourself in

the grip of a mental illness, it’s essential to address the past in order to move forward but with Rosie it was never just about vocalising those experiences and feelings. It was about confronting them head on and changing the way I felt about not only those pivotal life events – that led me to have so many negative beliefs about myself – but also the person I was allowing myself to be. I was allowing other people’s perspectives and opinions of me to shape the way I felt about myself. Deep down, we all know who our true selves are but at that moment in time, I couldn’t have been further away from her. What Rosie helped me to do was reclaim the person who both she and I truly believed deserved to be happy.

There was a time when I had just accepted that my illness was and would always be a part of me but since meeting Rosie, I have turned my life around in a way that I never thought was possible.
