Megan McCoy FOR THE HERALD

T

he LethbridgeChamber of Commerce has seen significant changes in the last year—and intends to continuewith even

more changes to offer asmuch as possible to the community. The chamber has changed its

governancemodel to an 11-person board after having a 40-person board just a fewyears ago. The newboardwill include three

executivemembers and eight general members and is expected to help structure policy and engagement within the chamber. CyndiVos, the newly appointed executive officer of the chamber, has

been a part of theChamber of Commerce in her entrepreneurship endeavours in the city, and said she is ready to see these changes enhancememberships. “Nowthe chamber is

changing to an executive officer type of role and getting back into the original purpose of the chamber, which is to be the voice of business,” she said. Vos said that a part of

the newchangeswhichwill bemade is to grow relationshipswith the post- secondary institutions to connect themwith local business in order to help students get jobs, and keep them

local, upon graduation. Another big priority for the chamber in the comingmonths is to re-establish a relationshipwith the Regional Innovation Network of Southern Alberta (RINSA), Vos confirmed. Through

RINSA and the institutions that

workwith them, the chamberwould like to be able to spread the

communications

opportunities that are found in the city and throughout southern Alberta,Vos

explained—be it through broadcast or other forms of connection. The chamberwants to see everyone

in rural areas have the same opportunities as the peoplewho live in theCity of Lethbridge. Vos stated thiswill allowbusinesses

to expresswhat they need, and explain what they have to offer, so itmay be better heard and shared. “We’ve been using our inside voice,”

Vos said. “We need to not be afraid to use our voice andmake sure our voice is heard loud and clear, but thoughtfully.” The changes to the governance

model come into effect as of July 1. Herald photo by Ian Martens
