S

tudents at Lethbridge College are going to be given the opportunity to experience design in a

whole newway this fall. Architectural Animation

Technology is being introduced to the college as a bridge between InteriorDesign Technology program(IDT) and Architecture. The newprogram

will usemany of the same design skills taught in the IDT program, butwill expand to teach space design through interactive game engines. The programis one of a kind

inCanada, and could be another huge drawing card internationally to Lethbridge College, officials say. Studentswill have the

opportunity to take the new programon its own or begin with the IDT programthen seamlessly transition into the

second year of Architectural AnimationTechnology, graduating in three yearswith two diplomas. The goal of the programis to

teach students to bring the ideas of architects to life through photorealistic drawings, complex animation and complex virtual reality experiences. Cherie Ritzel, an instructor of

the InteriorDesign Engineering program, helped design the curriculumfor the new

program. She said there is alreadymany students interested in the programwho have applied. “If you have an interest in

architecture and space and seeing your imagination come to life through constructed space, either of these programs could be a great choice,” she said. Ritzel said they are also

looking to hire two new instructional assistants to help with the transition of the

program, aswell asmore permanent staff in the future. She believes instructional

assistants are vital because they’re often college graduates who are familiarwith the program. The programhas an

international focus, preparing students to be able towork in city centres such asToronto or Vancouverwhile also equipping studentswith the abilities to work inmedium-sizedmarkets such as Lethbridge.
