Family run business continues legacy; celebrates 66 years in business.

A fixture in the city for the past 66

years, Oliver Health Foods has stood the test of time by offering quality natural health products backed by exceptional customer service. “If you want a supplement, we’re the

place to get it,” says Ryan Oliver, third generation owner along with his his parents Don and Dana Oliver, second generation owners. “If we don’t have it, we can find it for you.” Located in College Centre on the

city’s south side, Oliver Health Foods traces its roots back to 1949 when Howard Oliver began importing a multi-vitamin formula called Elemin and distributing it across Canada. In 1953, he expanded with a retail outlet on Third Avenue. “He was quite the businessman,” says

Ryan. “He had a lot of stuff going on all the time.” The Oliver family moved the

business to College Mall in 1979, where it remained until 2002 when the mall was demolished to make room a

Ryan, who continue to build on the legacy started by Howard. They stock the store with a wide

variety of vitamins, minerals and supplements, as well as an extensive grocery section for gluten-free, low carb and organic products, which includes local dairy products. Natural health and beauty aids also

feature prominently in the store, as well as an extensive selection of essential oils, which can be used for aromatherapy, soap making and natural cosmetics. Don is a founding member of the

Health First Network, an association of independent health food stores in Canada. The group created its own line of products and Oliver Health Foods is the exclusive distributor of the Health First brand in the Lethbridge area. “This association with the Health First

Network allows us to borrow from the collective wisdom and buying power of 113 stores across Canada,” Don says. “If I come across an issue I need information about I just start calling or

store appeal to a wide range of customers. Products to relieve symptoms of arthritis continue to be very popular, while a growing market for products geared towards the active lifestyle crowd- like protein powders and supplements - has emerged. “We’re finding a younger customer

base that is attracted to the endurance enhancing products,” Ryan says. Oliver’s staff is pleased to offer

knowledgeable advice on health products and will refer to dietitians, pharmacists, doctors, naturopaths or chiropractors when necessary. Because the Oliver family is focused

on “keeping our customers for life”, Don says the store also has a Customer Appreciation Day once a month. On the last Thursday of each month, customers receive a 20 per cent discount on all regular priced merchandise. The business also offers its customers

amonthly e-newsletter featuring health tips and product specials that can be accessed through the store’s Web site at http://www.oliverhealthfoods.ca
