n the span of less than amonth, Lethbridge and the Enmax Centre played host to national and international events.
First up was the 57th annual USports
Men'sUniversity CupHockey TournamentMarch 14–17, followed by the 2019 PioneerHi-BredWorldMen's Curling Championship mereweeks laterMarch 30 to April 7. Less than a year prior, Lethbridge
was the site of another national event —and the first of its kind to come to southern Alberta—as the 2018 Mackenzie Tour—PGATOUR Canada Lethbridge Paradise CanyonOpen teed off June 18-24 at thewestside course. But it was the USportsMen's
University CupHockey Tournament that kicked off an eventfulMarch as theUniversity of Lethbridge Pronghorns-hosted tourney made its first appearance in Lethbridge and 10th time in Alberta. For the hostHorns, therewere no
hometown dramatics as the eighth- seed was defeated 7-1 by their fellow CanadaWest teamAlberta Golden Bears in the quarter-finals in the single-elimination format. The Golden Bears eventually advanced to the gold medal game, but a repeat national title wasn’t in the cards as theUniversity of New BrunswickVarsity Reds posted a 4-2 win for the gold medal. The final had a semi-local angle as
formerMedicineHat Tiger and Calgary productMark Rassell scored the insurance goal for the Reds. In the bronze medal game, the St. Francis Xavier X-Men fromNova Scotia downed the SaskatchewanHuskies 5- 1.
Twoweeks later, hockey ice was
swapped out for pebbled ice as the world men’s curling championship featuring 13 rinks fromacross the globe drew in.
