Conviso Smart offers an effi - cient and sustainable way to con- trol weeds in sugar beet by creat- ing classically bred beet varieties that are herbicide tolerant. In ad- dition to broad spectrum weed control, it allows the amount of herbicide used can be signifi cant- ly reduced. Herbicide tolerant beet is eas- ier for growers to manage. It can also help improve margins by re- ducing the number of sprays to keep crops weed free. The system has impressed growers in trials – although good fi eld hygiene re- mains important. Welcoming the announce-

ment, Maribo Hilleshog chief ex- ecutive Niels U. Mikkelsen said the licence would enable the glob- al seed breeder to bring Conviso Smart technology to more farm- ers across the world. “We are now working full speed to incorporate this technology into our strong genetic material and are eager to present – once ready – Conviso Smart varieties to our customers, as we see great poten-

KWS board member Peter Hof- mann said innovations like Convi- so Smart were vital to help secure the long-term competitiveness sugar beet given ongoing regu- latory pressure on crop protec- tion products and the loss of ac- tive ingredients. “KWS faces the challenges of the future with the help of breed- ing,” said Mr Hofmann. “Innova- tive technologies such as Convi- so Smart are key and will make an important contribution to keep sugarbeet cultivation profi table and fi t for the future.”
